Job summary

Overview

The Cytologist participates in specialized and complex technical tasks involved in the processing and screening of cytologic specimens to detect evidence of cancer or other pathological conditions, ensuring efficient and accurate testing of patient specimens. Screening includes slides of both gynecologic and non‑gynecologic specimens, marking abnormalities, rendering diagnoses, and determining cases for quality control or subsequent review with a pathologist. The role also performs rapid on‑site evaluation (ROSE) using a tele‑pathology system during the collection, processing, and immediate evaluation of Fine Needle Aspirations.

Qualifications
  • Certifications: Cytologist (CT) within 1 year – American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
  • Education: Certificate of Completion in Cytotechnology; Bachelor’s Degree in Cytotechnology
Responsibilities
  • Screening of clinical specimen slides for evidence of cancer or other pathological conditions according to departmental terminology and protocols.
  • Marking abnormalities, rendering diagnoses, and determining cases for quality control or subsequent review with a pathologist.
  • Performing quality control and quality assurance procedures to maintain compliance with internal and external regulations.
  • Evaluating acceptability of specimens as required by department testing.
  • Collecting, processing, and immediately evaluating Fine Needle Aspirations.
  • Applying specimen processing knowledge to meet departmental requirements.
  • Conducting rapid on‑site evaluation (ROSE) using tele‑pathology systems.
Compensation and Benefits

The compensation range for this position is $34.51 per hour to $59.36 per hour. This range represents a good faith minimum and maximum at the time of posting. Actual compensation will depend on factors including experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked, and compensation model.
