Job summary

Abbott is hiring an Assistant Chemist III for the Altavista, VA plant on 2nd shift. The role supports the Nutrition division, performing assays, maintaining equipment, training staff, and ensuring GMP and regulatory compliance.

You will work with chemists and operators, handle method validation, and participate in safety programs while supporting Abbott's commitment to quality and health. Strong math and lab skills are essential.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent, plus 1 year of college science studies and 1 year of college mathematics.
• Some knowledge of regulatory standards for infant formula and nutritionals.
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and prepare simple reports.
• Mathematics knowledge includes basic operations; keyboard skills; computer skills and statistics desirable.
• Physical ability to lift 20–25 lbs; capable of normal laboratory work.
• Effective communication with chemists, operators, and management.

Responsibilities

• Observe safety rules; report incidents, near-misses, and spills; wear PPE; participate in EHS programs.
• Assist other chemists to troubleshoot and maintain analytical equipment and test methods.
• Train new chemists on laboratory operations, documentation, and safety.
• Perform assays per required methods; ensure results meet specifications.
• Identify and report method problems and out-of-spec conditions.
• Identify and correct test result issues; initiate root-cause investigations.
• Ensure GMP compliance and adherence to Abbott policies and regulations.
• Own area of expertise in lab improvement and drive goals efficiently.
• Meet FDA, OSHA and Abbott compliance standards.
