Job summary

Huntsville Hospital is seeking a laboratory support specialist to receive and process requisitions and specimens, order specified lab tests, respond to phone requests, and accurately enter data into the computer. A High School diploma or GED is required, with an Associate degree preferred for advancement.

MLA certification is preferred, and strong keyboarding (40 wpm) and customer-service skills are important.

Qualifications

• Education: High School diploma or GED required.
• Education preferred: Associates Degree with a minimum of 6 semester hours of chemistry and 6 semester hours of biology preferred.
• License, certification and/or registration: MLA certification preferred (ASCP or AMT).
• Experience: Previous work experience strongly preferred; keyboarding 40 wpm preferred.
• Additional Skills/Abilities: Excellent communication, fast-paced environment, confidentiality, teamwork, and flexible shift timing.

Job description

Provides technical support to the lab by receiving/processing requisitions/specimens and ordering specified lab tests according to standard operating procedures. Responds to phone requests and enters lab test data into computer.

Qualifications

Education: High School diploma or GED required.

Education preferred: Associates Degree with a minimum of 6 semester hours of chemistry and 6 semester hours of biology preferred.

License, certification and/or registration: MLA certification from a nationally recognized credentialing agency (i.e. ASCP or AMT) preferred

Experience: Previous work experience strongly preferred. Keyboarding experience, 40 wpm preferred.

Additional Skills/Abilities: Candidate must have excellent communication skills with the ability to work in a fast paced, customer service oriented environment, requiring prioritizing and changing tasks frequently and quickly. Must be able to maintain absolute confidentiality in the handling of patient information. Able to work in a high stress environment with little/no downtime. Must be able to work in a team setting and maintain absolute confidentiality in the handling of patient information. Absolute integrity and accuracy in patient identification process. Position may require flexibility related to the end of shift as shift end time may vary with workload.
