Job summary

The State of Georgia through West Georgia Technical College is seeking a Lab Assistant for Welding & Joining Technology. Under direct supervision of faculty, you will perform routine welding lab tasks, assist instruction, and help maintain equipment and supplies.

This is a part-time, per-semester position with no benefits; hours may include morning, afternoon or evening slots. A diploma or associate degree in Welding & Joining Technology is preferred; valid driver’s license is a plus.

Job Description

Under direct supervision of faculty members, the lab assistant performs routine, standardized welding laboratory work requiring close attention to detailed procedures in the preparation and basic maintenance of welding laboratory equipment, inventory and requisition of supplies, assisting faculty in the supervision of students assigned to laboratories, and other related duties. Employed on an individual academic semester basis. Duties include but are not limited to assisting faculty members with classroom instruction, adherence to safety procedures, and other miscellaneous tasks related to instruction; tutoring or mentoring students; cleaning labs as needed; and obtaining materials needed for classes, including texts and other materials. Selected candidate must be able to work morning, afternoon or evening hours, Monday through Thursday The payment method is based on contact hours, with a rate of $18.00 per contact hour.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Successful completion of courses which are appropriate to the assignment, or directly related experience in Welding and Joining Technology.
  • Valid driver’s license.
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • A Diploma or Associate degree in Welding & Joining Technology or related field from an accredited institution.
PAY & BENEFITS
  • $18.00 per contact hour.
  • All lab positions are part-time, temporary positions offered on a per-semester basis based on the needs of the college.
  • Lab Assistant positions do not include benefits or promises of future full-time employment.

SAFETY AND TECHNOLOGY
  • Ensures safety and security requirements are met in the Welding and Joining Technology program.
  • Supports faculty to ensure all equipment is in working order.
  • Ensure students are instructed in and follow all safety rules for operating equipment and using tools.
  • Ensure classrooms and work areas are properly cleaned and maintained at all times.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This job operates in a professional classroom and lab environment. This role routinely uses standard office, classroom, and lab equipment and technology.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, talk, or hear. The employee must occasionally lift or move classroom/lab equipment and supplies up to 25 pounds.
