Job summary

Asante in Medford, OR is seeking a Lab Assistant/Specimen Processor to support the pathology lab. You will process specimens, ensure order accuracy, and follow regulatory SOPs with attention to requisition dates and specimen adequacy.

This full-time role requires flexible hours, including days, evenings, weekends and holidays, with shift differentials; you may assist histology, cytology, and transcription workflows, and duties such as slide prep, staining, labeling and report transcription.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; effective communication skills.
• Knowledge of medical terminology.
• 1 year lab or healthcare setting experience preferred.
• Phlebotomy experience preferred.
• Data entry and computer proficiency preferred.

Responsibilities

• Receive and process laboratory specimens per SOPs and regulatory requirements.
• Assess requisition dates and specimen adequacy to ensure accurate order entry and high-quality results.
• Enter orders accurately and maintain compliant documentation.
• Support histology, cytology, and transcription workflows.
• Assist with slide preparation, staining, cover slipping, and labeling; perform transcription duties as needed.
• Maintain accuracy, safety, and quality in daily lab operations.

Additional Position Details:FTE: 1.0 | Full Time | Variable Hours/Variable Days

Due to the nature of the work - this position does require the flexibility to work variable hours and variable days - to include day, evening, weekend and holidays hours.

SalaryRange:$19.86 - $27.30

Shift Differentials:

• $1.27 extra for working between 3:00pm - 11:00pm
• $2.15 extra for working between 11:01pm and 7:00am
• $1.10 extra for working weekends

Position Summary

TheLab Assistant/Specimen Processorcontributes to the overall patient experience by using organizational and communication skills to receive and process laboratory specimens as specified by regulatory requirements and laboratory standard operating procedures. This is done through assessing requisition dates, specimen adequacy and acceptability to ensure accurate order entry and high-quality laboratory results.

In the Pathology Lab specifically, you will also support histology, cytology, and transcriptionist workflows. Some duties include but are not limited to assisting with slide preparation, staining, cover slipping, and labeling. You will also perform transcriptionist related duties including pathology report transcription, case preparation, document review and report distribution.

Qualifications

Education

• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent experience demonstrating the ability to effectively communicate as needed for the position is required
• Prior education or demonstrated knowledge in medical terminology

Experience

• 1 year of laboratory experience or a combination of education and or related experience in a healthcare setting providing knowledge of medical terminology is required
• Specimen processing experience including esoteric reference lab specimen handling and packaging, preferred
• Phlebotomy experience and/or knowledge of laboratory tests and /or laboratory ordering processes, preferred
• College courses/credits toward advanced degree, especially science course work, preferred
• Data entry, keyboarding experience and computer proficiency, preferred

Licensure/Certifications

• Medical Laboratory Assistant through the Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), preferred

Working Conditions

• This position requires the ability to stand/walk or lift/handle/carry between 20 and 50 pounds as a regular part of your work duties.
