Job summary

The Laboratory Assistant – Phlebotomist at CHOC performs specimen collection, receipt, and distribution within the laboratory, and assists with operating standard laboratory equipment. Required: High School Diploma or GED and graduation from a phlebotomy training program; two years of phlebotomy experience is needed, with two+ years in infant/child blood collection preferred.

Certification as Phlebotomist Tech 1 is expected.

Job description

Job Summary

The Laboratory Assistant – Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting, receiving, and distributing specimens within the laboratory, as well as the operation of anticipated laboratory equipment.

Pay Range

Minimum $26.00
Midpoint $26.00
Maximum $27.00
Rate of pay is determined by various factors, including but not limited to knowledge, skills, competencies, experience, education, as well as position requirements.

Experience
  • Required: Minimum two (2) years of phlebotomy experience.
  • Preferred: Two (2) or more years of infant and children blood collection experience. Previous experience with Good Lab Practice.
Education
  • Required: High School Diploma/ GED or equivalent. Graduation from Phlebotomist Tech training program.
  • Preferred: Completion of some college level courses.
Specialized Skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; strong critical thinking, judgment, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Be a team player; ability to operate lab equipment and proficient in human venipuncture techniques.
  • Excellent analytical and organization skills; excellent critical thinking judgment, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail, vigilance, poise, and composure in stressful situations.
  • Knowledge of computer systems and software used in functional area.
Licensure

Required: Certified Phlebotomist Tech 1

Work Environments

Functional Demand: Sedentary – Very light energy level. Lift 10 lbs. box overhead. Lift and carry 15 lbs. Push/pull 20 lbs. cart.

Physical Activity Requirements: Bending, Carry Objects, Climbing, Keyboard use/repetitive motion, Pinching/fine motor activities, Push/Pull, Reaching forward, Reaching overhead, Sitting, Squat/kneel/crawl (Squad & Knee), Standing, Talk or hear, Taste or smell, Twisting, Walking, Wrist position deviation.

Physical Activity Lifting: Lifting (Floor to waist level) - Occasional 0-35%, Lifting (Waist level and above) - Occasional 0-35%.

Sensory Requirements: Color Discrimination, Depth Perception, Far Vision, Hearing, Near Vision.

Environment Requirements: Airborne communicable disease, bloodborne pathogens, chemical, dust particular matter, extreme noise levels, extreme temperatures, radiation, uneven surfaces or elevations.
