Lab Assistant/Phlebotomist, MA-P
Location: FCN Laboratory Services, Bellingham, WA 98225 and other Whatcom and Skagit County sites.
Position: Full-time, non-exempt hourly float position. Variable shifts, Monday-Friday with alternating weekends, available throughout Whatcom and Skagit counties.
Salary: $19.50 – $28.93 per hour. Additional $3.00 per hour shift differential for eligible evening and weekend hours.
Job Summary
The Lab Assistant/Phlebotomist independently performs venipuncture and capillary punctures on adult and pediatric patients, and processes appropriate specimens for testing.
Responsibilities
- Prepare workspace with all essential supplies to efficiently process specimens.
- Maintain an organized and clean workspace.
- Enter required information for specimen testing into the laboratory computer system (e.g., collection date & time).
- Ensure proper forms accompany specimens per FCN Lab policy; cancel and credit tests that cannot be collected, document information in the computer, and notify appropriate personnel.
- Label specimens accurately per FCN Lab policy.
- Receive specimens and verify correct handling during transport to maintain specimen integrity.
- Process specimens for analysis per written protocols.
- Assist in verifying lab requisitions for outside labs contain correct test(s), date and time of collections, and other specimen identifiers.
- Act as a resource: research and investigate laboratory-related problems and implement solutions.
- Mentor, train, and support new employees.
- Complete and report on special assignments as needed.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Medical terminology.
- Regulatory requirements applicable to the assigned function.
- Policies, standards, procedures, tools and protocols applicable to the work unit and function.
- Intermediate computer skills including Microsoft Windows OS, Outlook and data entry; ability to use multiple computer systems simultaneously.
- Manual dexterity and acuity necessary to prepare, screen and process specimens.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to organize and prioritize workload.
- Typing proficiency.
- Problem‑solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Strong customer service in person and via telephone.
- Effective communication with providers, staff and patients.
- Ability to separate plasma and operate laboratory centrifuges.
- Ability to concentrate for long periods, use good judgement, work accurately under pressure and manage stress to meet deadlines.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED, or equivalent knowledge and skills obtained through education, training, and experience.
- Completion of a formal Phlebotomist training program.
- One or more years of experience in a medical office or laboratory preferred.
- Active Medical Assistant – Phlebotomist (MA-P) licensure through the Washington State Department of Health.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification in accordance with FCN BLS policy.
Physical Requirements
Requires occasional standing, walking, sitting, hand‑to‑finger coordination, use of tools or controls, reaching with hands and arms, climbing stairs, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and listening attentively. Occasional lifting and/or moving of up to 30 pounds.
