Job Overview

We are seeking a Lab Assistant to work in various laboratory departments, including collecting blood specimens, working with microbiology or pathology specimens, or operating remotely at Patient Service Centers. Responsibilities include creating patient encounters, ordering tests, specimen preparation, assisting technical staff, and ensuring proper specimen handling across all patient age groups.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform venipunctures, heel sticks, and finger sticks accurately and efficiently, ensuring patient safety.
• Drive to patient service centers for phlebotomy services as needed.
• Accept specimens and requisitions, providing excellent customer service.
• Identify patients and specimens using two identifiers and label specimens correctly.
• Register specimens into the Laboratory Information System and evaluate specimen adequacy.
• Perform specimen processing, including identification, aliquoting, and slide preparation.
• Follow infection control and safety protocols, including handling chemicals safely.
• Meet workload productivity standards and support LEAN principles.
• Operate laboratory information systems and computers proficiently.
• Participate in peer teaching and handle laboratory communications professionally.
• Monitor and document specimen temperatures as required.

Schedule

• Monday - Friday, 4-10 hour shifts, rotating days off. No weekends or holidays.

Minimum Requirements

• Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training within 3 months of hire.
• Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory experience preferred.
• Computer skills required.
• For reference labs: Valid Iowa driver’s license, meet safety standards, and be at least 18 years old.

Education

• High school diploma or GED required.
