Job description

Laboratory Technician Assistant (clinical lab assistant/phlebotomist)

24 hrs/wk, night shift 11p-7a, every other weekend and holiday required.

Job Summary

Performs, under minimal supervision, daily workflow management of the section. Responsible for training and competency assessments of new LTAs and phlebotomy students, and collaborates to monitor phlebotomy reports for timely service. May perform duties of LTA, Phlebotomist, or CLA as needed for patient care, and finds coverage when necessary.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Required: Phlebotomy and lab experience
  • Preferred: Graduate of Phlebotomy Training program
Minimum Skills/Abilities
  • Commitment to ongoing skill development via in-services, education, and on-the-job training
  • Participation in staff meetings and documentation review
  • Assist in orientation and mentoring of others
  • Perform analytical and decision-making tasks with minimal supervision
  • Recognize when to seek assistance
  • Understand hospital and departmental policies, including safety protocols
  • Awareness of hospital programs and services
Certification/Licensure
  • Phlebotomy Certification preferred; ASCP certification/eligibility within one year
Job Responsibilities
  • Train new LTAs and students, maintain competency checklists
  • Coordinate and monitor activities of LTAs on shifts
  • Distribute work and liaise with other departments
  • Demonstrate advanced skills in specimen collection and troubleshooting LIS devices
  • Direct specimens appropriately and handle reports
  • Review specimen status regularly and perform duties of an LTA proficiently
  • Perform other lab duties as directed, ensuring high venipuncture success rate
  • Follow safety protocols and PPE usage
  • Ensure compliance with policies and participate in quality improvement
  • Manage specimens, inventory, and records accurately
  • Maintain safety and participate in training
  • Perform related duties as needed, respecting diversity and professionalism
