Laboratory Technician Assistant (clinical lab assistant/phlebotomist)
24hrs/wk, night shift 11p-7a, every other weekend and every other holiday required.
Job Summary
Performs, under minimal supervision, daily workflow management of the section. Responsible for training and competency assessments of all new LTAs and phlebotomy students, and makes recommendations on skill assessments. Collaborates to monitor phlebotomy status reports to ensure timely services. May perform duties of LTA, Phlebotomist, and/or CLA as needed for patient care, and finds coverage when necessary.
Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Phlebotomy and laboratory experience required
- Graduate of Phlebotomy Training program preferred
Minimum Skills and Abilities
- Committed to ongoing skill development through available resources (e.g., in-services, educational programs, on-the-job training)
- Participates in staff meetings and reviews documentation as required
- Assists in orientation and mentoring of staff
- Performs analytical and decision-making functions with minimal supervision
- Recognizes when to seek assistance or consultation
- Understands hospital and departmental policies, including safety procedures
- Awareness of hospital programs and services
Certification/Licensure
- Phlebotomy Certification Preferred; ASCP certification/eligibility within one year
Job Responsibilities
- Training of new LTAs and students; maintaining competency checklists
- Monitoring and coordinating activities of LTAs on assigned shifts
- Distributing work and liaising with other departments
- Demonstrated advanced skills in specimen collection and computer troubleshooting
- Directing specimens to appropriate departments
- Handling procedures and reports related to LIS devices
- Reviewing specimen status reports regularly and noting time constraints
- Performing all duties of an LTA proficiently
- Executing additional clinical laboratory assistant duties as directed
- Achieving a 95% success rate in venipunctures
- Following safety protocols and PPE usage
- Adhering to departmental policies and quality improvement initiatives
- Checking in specimens with couriers and verifying manifests
- Managing specimen labels and tests to reduce repeats
- Communicating effectively via telephone
- Performing troubleshooting and maintenance of pneumatic tube systems
- Processing specimens and preparing them for referral labs
- Maintaining inventory and storing supplies properly
- Keeping accurate records manually and electronically
- Following safety policies and participating in safety training
- Supporting a respectful, professional environment
