Job summary

Iowa Central Community College is seeking a Lab Assistant to provide academic and operational support across laboratory, classroom, clinical, studio, or other instructional settings. You will assist with instructional activities, help students complete assignments, and help maintain a safe, organized learning environment.

The role involves setting up materials, documenting student activities, monitoring equipment, and coordinating with faculty on safety and equipment needs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or 6,000 hours of directly related experience required.
  • Additional licenses, certifications, registrations, or other qualifications may be required based on the instructional area.

Responsibilities

  • Assist program coordinators and faculty with instructional activities and assessments in labs, classrooms, or instructional spaces.
  • Prepare, organize, set up, and clean up materials, equipment, and instructional spaces.
  • Provide students with guidance during instructional activities per faculty direction and course requirements.
  • Promote and follow safety procedures, departmental guidelines, and College policies.
  • Communicate with faculty regarding student participation, progress, safety concerns, and equipment needs.
  • Help maintain an organized, professional, and academically rigorous learning environment.
  • Assist with class-related documentation, recordkeeping, and reporting of labs and activities when assigned by faculty.
  • Assist faculty with developing or improving instructional activities and student learning opportunities.
  • Monitor the condition and availability of instructional equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Provide general support to students by answering questions and reinforcing instructions.
  • Assist with basic care, organization, and maintenance of equipment and spaces.
  • Assist with requesting, receiving, inventorying, and maintaining instructional equipment and supplies.
  • Attend program, department, safety, or College meetings and trainings as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in a field related to the assigned program or instructional area; or 6,000 hours of related professional/occupational experience

Position Summary

The Lab Assistant provides academic and operational support to program coordinators, faculty, and students within assigned laboratory, classroom, clinical, studio, or other instructional settings. This position assists with instructional activities and assessments, supports students as they complete assigned work, and helps prepare and maintain a safe, organized, and effective learning environment.

Constant (67–100%)
  • Assist program coordinators and faculty with instructional activities and assessments conducted in laboratory, classroom, clinical, studio, or other learning environments.
  • Prepare, organize, set up, and clean up materials, equipment, and instructional spaces.
  • Provide students with appropriate assistance and guidance during instructional activities, consistent with faculty direction and established course requirements.
  • Promote and follow applicable safety procedures, departmental guidelines, and College policies.
  • Communicate with program coordinators and faculty regarding student participation, progress, safety concerns, equipment needs, and other relevant matters.
  • Help maintain an organized, professional, and academically rigorous learning environment.
Frequent (34–66%)
  • Assist with class-related documentation, recordkeeping, and reporting, including recording or evaluating student labs and activities when assigned and authorized by faculty.
  • Assist faculty with developing, reviewing, or improving instructional activities and student learning opportunities.
  • Monitor the condition and availability of instructional equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Provide general support to students by answering questions, reinforcing instructions, and directing concerns to the appropriate faculty member.
Occasional (10–33%)
  • Assist with the basic care, organization, and maintenance of equipment and instructional spaces.
  • Assist with requesting, receiving, inventorying, and maintaining instructional equipment and supplies.
  • Participate in student recruitment, engagement, and retention activities, when applicable.
  • Attend program, department, safety, or College meetings and training sessions as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

A bachelor’s degree in a field related to the assigned program or instructional area, or at least 6,000 hours of directly related professional or occupational experience, is required.

The successful candidate must possess relevant education, training, professional experience, or technical knowledge appropriate to the assigned program. Additional licenses, certifications, registrations, or other qualifications may be required based on the instructional area.

The physical requirements of this position may vary based on the assigned academic program and instructional environment. The position may involve sitting, standing, walking, talking, listening, observing student activities, reaching, bending, grasping, using fine-motor skills, viewing instructional materials or equipment, and performing repetitive motions.

The position may also require writing on boards, using instructional aids and equipment, carrying or moving instructional materials, traveling between College buildings, and occasionally traveling to off-campus instructional sites, recruitment activities, meetings, or training events.

The position may require lifting or moving instructional materials, supplies, or equipment. Specific physical and safety requirements will be determined by the assigned program and the essential functions of the position.
