DESCRIPTION

The Marine Physical Laboratory Division at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego is seeking Lab Assistant 2.

Under supervision, the Lab Assistant will assist in CORDC lab safety, security, and hazmat coordination and inventory management. Assist in the coordination of domestic and international shipping of oceanographic equipment and containers and exporting restricted gear including coordinating with MPL business office foreign shipping administrator and SIO HAZMAT office. Uphold and oversee lab safety and hazardous waste disposal procedures. Responsible for organizing and coordinating conferences, meetings and workshops. The assistant will also organize and maintain lab, and monitor lab safety procedures. They need to be able to operate and maintain oceanographic sampling equipment for collection of geological, physical, chemical and biological data. Maintenance includes routinely working with vendors to keep oceanographic instruments calibrated. Coordinate the logistics related to using oceanographic instrumentation at sea, including working with ship, port, engineering, and scientific personnel. Prepare plots, graphs, summaries, reports, and presentations of data as requested by Principal Investigators. Coordinate and assist Principal Investigators in managing the activities of a diverse coastal observing laboratory, including an active field program. In support of research efforts, assist with the design, operation, and maintenance of 3D printers. Assist others in developing and troubleshooting custom software using MATLAB, R, and C++ to support experimental and data analysis needs. Additional responsibilities include managing equipment and supplies, ensuring laboratory safety compliance, and training new personnel.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduation from high school or a GED and two (2) years of laboratory experience, or two (2) years of college coursework in natural, physical, or engineering sciences with at least one (1) year of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Excellent laboratory and organization skills.

  • Prior laboratory experience.

  • Competence in computational tasks, including data support using Microsoft Office or similar tools.

  • Strong organizational and record-keeping skills, with the ability to manage laboratory supplies and maintain detailed documentation of experiments.

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

  • Knowledge of laboratory safety features.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Offer of employment is contingent upon candidate clearing the background check process.

  • Position is expected to travel to campus and various off-site locations at least 1-2 times per week.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $45,999 - $54,079 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $22.03 - $25.90

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
