Job summary

Kootenai Health is seeking a Lab Assistant to collect blood samples and update patient demographics and insurance data. The role supports histology, specimen processing, and front desk tasks as needed. Excellent attention to detail and adherence to procedures are essential.

Responsibilities include entering orders into LIS/EHR, handling specimens, verifying records, and communicating with payers. Some duties may involve off-site draws in company vehicles, with supervision guiding daily

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • 1 year phlebotomy or related medical training/experience preferred.
  • ASCP or similar phlebotomy certification preferred.
  • BLS required.
  • Valid driver’s license; insurable to drive to off-site locations.

Responsibilities

  • Performs order entry and transcribes diagnosis codes into LIS and scans requisitions into EHR.
  • Receives specimens and performs pre-analytical processes for lab testing.
  • Verifies records and prepares specimens for laboratory analysis; follows up with referring labs for missing info.
  • Collects demographic and insurance information from patients at point of service.
  • Verifies active payer sources for patients and communicates basic financial policies.
  • Obtains required signatures on clinical and financial consent forms.
  • Creates image of insurance and ID cards; handles incoming calls and triages requests.
  • May perform off-site lab draw services as required; may drive to campus locations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned; works under supervision and follows established guidelines.
  • Maintains regular attendance as an essential function.

Lab Assistant

Position Summary

Draws and collects blood samples from patients, verifies and updates patient demographic records and insurance/financial information, and prepares specimens for laboratory analysis. Performs phlebotomy-related work along with additional duties related to histology, specimen processing, or lab front desk.


Responsibilities


  • Performs order entry and transcribes diagnosis codes into LIS and scans lab requisitions into electronic health record

  • Receives specimens and performs all pre-analytical processes related to lab testing

  • Verifies records and prepares specimens for laboratory analysis; follows up with referring laboratories for missing information as needed

  • Collects demographic and insurance information from incoming patients at the point of service

  • Verifies active payer sources for patients

  • Communicates basic financial policies as pertaining to insurance coverage

  • Obtains required signatures on the various clinical and financial consent forms

  • Creates image of insurance and identification cards

  • Managing incoming phone calls to Lab, triaging requests for information or assistance appropriately

  • May provide off-site lab draw services as required based on eligibility, including driving and/or riding in company vehicle to campus location(s)

  • Performs all assigned duties related to the designated area of the lab

  • Has knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field

  • Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job

  • Works under immediate supervision

  • Typically reports to a supervisor or manager

  • Performs other related duties as assigned

  • Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the field

  • Regular and predictable attendance is an essential job function

  • Competent to meet age specific needs of the unit assigned


Requirements and Minimum Qualifications


  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred

  • Documentation of training from a recognized Phlebotomy school or program OR a minimum of 1 year Phlebotomy or related medical training and experience in a clinical, hospital, or laboratory setting required

  • Certificate of successful completion of written and/or practical Phlebotomy examination for ASCP, or similar accredited Phlebotomy certification agency found to be acceptable by the laboratory director and/or supervisory staff preferred

  • Driving record will be checked upon hire and annually to determine eligibility to drive and/or transport passengers to off-site lab draw locations, as applicable. Those who do not meet insurability requirements will not be permitted to drive.

  • BLS required


Working Conditions


  • Must be able to lift and move up to 25 lbs

  • Must be able to maintain a standing and/or sitting position

  • Typical equipment used in a clinical job

  • Must be able to stoop crouch or bend

  • Exposure to needles, blood and body fluids, etc.
