Job summary

The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE), Office of Special Education and Early Learning, Division of State Schools, Kentucky School for the Blind (KSB) in Louisville (Jefferson County) has an opening for a KSB/KSD Instructional Assistant.

Responsibilities include assisting students with disabilities, supporting teachers, and helping with instructional materials in a setting for hearing and/or vision impaired students.

Qualifications

  • Two years of experience working within a school or classroom environment.
  • Must furnish SLPI Survival level documentation within twelve months of appointment and maintain required credentials.

Responsibilities

  • Assist students with disabilities in a classroom setting and on school trips, individually or in small groups.
  • Assist classroom teachers with instructional needs and follow teacher direction.
  • Prepare instructional materials and support behavior management as needed.
  • Attend training and cover classes when necessary.
  • Provide office support including phones, visitors, filing, and copies.

Description

The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE), Office of Special Education and Early Learning, Division of State Schools, Kentucky School for the Blind (KSB) in Louisville (Jefferson County) has an opening for a KSB/KSD Instructional Assistant.

Duties And Responsibilities
  • Assist students with disabilities in a classroom setting, during transition between buildings and classes and on school trips. Works individuals or in small groups with students.
  • Assists classroom teachers with instructional needs. Collaborate with teachers and accept direction/guidance from teachers. Follow expectations established by classroom teacher.
  • Assist with preparation of instructional materials.
  • Works with behavior challenged students with appropriate behavior techniques.
  • Attends training offered by the school relating to education. May cover classes when necessary.
  • Assist students to various activities and places in the buildings on campus.
  • Provides office support and coverage as needed to include answering phones, greeting visitors, filing, and making copies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION:

High School graduate

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS:

Two (2) years of experience working within a school or classroom environment.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE:

Additional education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

None

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.):

An employee in this job title at the Kentucky School for the Deaf must furnish to the agency's appointing authority within twelve (12) months of appointment or entrance into this class, documentation that he or she possesses the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) rating of "Survival" level. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.

Working Conditions

Work is typically performed in an office or classroom setting assisting teachers and assisting students who are hearing impaired and/or vision impaired.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
