Job summary

City of Indianapolis and Marion County is seeking a lifeguard to support aquatic operations at an assigned park location. The role reports to the pool manager and head lifeguards and requires enforcing rules, performing rescues, and ensuring safety for patrons and staff.

Job description

Position is responsible for routine daily operational tasks related to aquatic operations at assigned park location under the supervision and direction of the pool manager or head lifeguard. Established policies and procedures control actions. Independent judgment is utilized when there are no available policies and procedures and errors in judgment may cause serious risk and significant liability. Incumbent will be required to exercise good judgment in the areas of aquatic safety. Incumbent will be required to make quick, concise, and correct decisions that may affect the health, safety and wellbeing of pool patrons and staff. This position will work under the supervision of the park manager, assistant park manager, pool manager and head lifeguards. Position reports to PoolManager.

  • Lifeguards and scans assigned zone of protection
  • Enforces rules and performs proper rotation
  • Provides safety assistance, rescues, emergency actions and first aid when necessary
  • Monitors participants and users of the facility with the highest priority on safety and exemplary customer service
  • Provides the highest attention to safety for participants, self, and fellow employees
  • Follows all established protocol for biohazard materials
  • Follows all aquatic facility rules and protects self from sun exposure
  • Immediately reports any hazardous conditions to supervisor, including inability or scan zone due to weather or other conditions
  • Maintains minimum number of in-service hours required by department and meet minimum standards for both independent and internal performance audits
  • Maintains clean facility, grounds, pool deck and bath house facilities
  • Assists with accident reports, chemical level testing and reporting, water testing, program registration, maintaining class lists and swim lessons records, answering phones, communicating with the public, facility inspections and pool vacuuming
  • Teaches, coaches, and assists with lessons, swim team, other programs, and special events at location
  • Provides for the supervision and safe operation of all aquatic programs
  • Adheres to all Department City of Indianapolis policy and procedures
  • Must maintain confidentiality at all times

Minimum Job Requirements and Qualifications

Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral forms. Must be customer service and people oriented. Ability to follow established procedures, policies, and protocol. Licenses/Certifications required or ability to obtain: Lifeguard License required. Water Safety Instructor desired. Candidate must be comfortable working within a diverse organization and have a fluency in and commitment to matters of equity and inclusion.

Preferred Job Requirements and Qualifications

High school diploma and/or equivalent preferred.

Incumbents are assigned to the park location/aquatic facility as a primary work location in a standard aquatic facility environment and outdoors where required. Outdoors in the sun during summer months requires appropriate sun protection by employee. Work hours will include holidays, weekends, and evenings. Will be expected to travel to various locations on occasion for work related activities or training.

Physical Conditions
  1. Some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10) pounds
  2. Tasks require the ability to perceive and hear sounds and see visual cues or signals
  3. Tasks require the ability to communicate orally
