Job summary

SumUp in Berlin is seeking a Backend Software Engineer to own backend services within the Transfers Excellence squad. You will help migrate to a unified global transfer platform, work across active and legacy systems, and contribute to architectural decisions that scale money movement across regions.

You will collaborate with teams globally, review code, enhance observability, and apply AI-assisted tooling to speed up workflows while maintaining high reliability and performance.

Qualifications

• Solid experience as a Backend Software Engineer with Kotlin/Go/Java in modern stacks.
• Strong understanding of distributed systems and event-driven patterns.
• Experience with microservices, Spring Boot, and API design.
• Proactive in reliability, observability, and high-throughput environments.
• Excellent written and spoken English; collaborates across global teams.
• Focus on how backend decisions affect the end user experience.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain backend services at the heart of SumUp's transfer infrastructure, owning development to production.
• Contribute to migrating from market-specific services to a unified global transfer platform across multiple regions.
• Raise well-scoped PRs, conduct thorough code reviews, maintain code quality and test coverage.
• Participate in incident reviews and on-call rotations to ensure service reliability.
• Contribute to the technical roadmap through architecture discussions for distributed systems.
• Apply AI tooling to accelerate engineering workflows and raise the team's AI literacy.
