Job summary

Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware is seeking a part-time kitchen helper to assist the Kitchen Manager in preparing daily meals for youth program sites in Sussex and Kent counties. You will prep hot and cold foods, package meals, and assist with deliveries, following USDA and state nutrition guidelines.

Responsibilities include cleaning, food handling, portioning, labeling, and maintaining sanitation standards.

Qualifications

  • High school degree or equivalent
  • Two years’ experience in a commercial kitchen preferred but not required
  • Serve Safe certification required within first 90 days
  • Excellent understanding of food preparation fundamentals
  • Knowledge of food allergies and foodborne illnesses
  • Basic mathematical skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Valid driver’s license for 3–5 years with clean record

  • Clean and sanitize work areas, equipment and utensils
  • Store food properly and label/rotate ingredients
  • Prepare a variety of foods as instructed
  • Portion, wrap and package meals for delivery
  • Deliver meals to program sites in Sussex and Kent counties as needed
  • Weigh and measure ingredients; maintain inventory logs
  • Work on prep lines to assemble meal components

For over 90 years, Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware has impacted thousands of lives across Delaware. We are the largest licensed provider of childcare in Delaware and the only statewide Boys & Girls Club in the nation.

Each and everyday girls and boys are left to find their own recreation and companionship. An increasing number of kids are at home with no adult care or supervision. Young people need to know they have a place in their community where they can go. Clubs provide a safe haven for youth, allow them to meet with friends and be a part of positive peer groups. Club programs teach life skills, conflict resolution and focus on the development of character. Clubs also provide members with positive role models and a nurturing environment that help improve decision-making skills.

Position Summary

This position requires performance of a variety of food preparationduties other than cooking, suchas prepping hot and cold foods for packaging of meal componentsand occasional delivery of meals to program sites when necessary. This position will be responsible forsupportingthe Kitchen Managerand Assistant Kitchen Manager ina kitchen operation that prepares daily meals to be delivered to youth program sites in Sussex and Kent counties. The meals will be preparedunder the nutritional guidelines specified in the USDA and State of Delaware youth food service programs. This job requires strict compliance with food safety and overallsanitary guidelines as directedin federal and state regulations as well as those set forth by the Kitchen Manager and Assistant Kitchen Manager.

Essential functions:
  • Clean and sanitizework areas, equipment, and utensils.
  • Store food in designated containers and storage areas to prevent spoilage.
  • Prepare a variety of foods according to supervisors' instructions, following approved procedures.
  • Ensureingredients are tagged, date-labeled, covered, stored and rotated effectively.
  • Portion, wrap and package the food in preparation for meal deliveries.
  • Place food trays over food warmers for immediate service, or store them in refrigerated storage cabinets.
  • Weigh or measure ingredients.
  • Wash and prepare food products for cooking or serving.
  • Maintain log to track quantity ofingredientsand supplies.
  • Work on prep lines to assemble meal components.
  • Deliver meals to locations throughout Sussex and Kent County as needed.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
Educational Requirement:
  • High school degree or equivalent
  • Two years’ experience working in a commercial kitchenis preferred, but not required
  • Serve Safe certification (required within first90 daysof employment)
  • Excellent understanding of food preparation fundamentals.
  • Sound understanding of food allergies and foodborne illnesses.
  • Basic mathematical skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s License for at least 3 years and no more than 5 points on driving record
Working Conditions:
  • Position requires occasional pushing of cart, bending, reaching and climbing
  • Standing for prolonged periods of time
  • Frequent light to moderate lifting

Work Hours:7a.m. – 1:00p.m. Monday through Friday (Hours mayvary according to the production needs of the kitchen.Occasional evening or weekends may be required).
