Kitchen Manager in Training, Nutrition Services

Classification: Non‑Exempt

Salary: $20.51 per hour (Range 19). Additional salary credit may be given for internal transfers and recent Greeley‑Evans School District 6 rehires, up to $32.85 per hour.

Benefits: Comprehensive health, dental, vision, life insurance and other benefit‑eligible programs are available immediately upon hire. Additional plans include 401(k), 403(b) and 457(b).

Paid Leave: Sick leave, discretionary leave, vacation and paid holidays are available to classified employees.  

Reports to: Nutrition Area Supervisor

Education / Experience
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Supervision training or management training required.
  • Valid Colorado driver’s license and meet current district vehicle insurance qualifications.
  • Employment begins with an 80‑working‑day trial period during which performance and suitability will be evaluated.
Preferred
  • Certification by School Nutrition Association.
  • Knowledge of large‑quantity food preparation and health department standards of sanitary food practices.
Professional Development
  • Within the first full calendar year, if competencies are achieved, the KM1 will automatically be eligible for advancement to a KM2 position.
  • If not already certified, Certified Food Protection Manager certification must be obtained within 60 days of being hired.
Job Description

Summary / Objective: Performs supervisory and operational activities related to on‑site school meal preparation and presentation, staff management, and financial records management for the Nutrition Services Department. Regular attendance is required.

Essential Functions
  • 30% – Food Preparation, Presentation & Service: Oversee and serve students and adult customers; maintain orderly foodservice lines and spaces; perform and supervise safe food preparation per federal, state, and district guidelines; ensure meals are served and accounted for per USDA regulations.
  • 30% – Back of the House Responsibilities: Order placement, inventory control and counting, food production reporting, point-of-sale management and time‑clock oversight; maintain kitchen productivity with proper staffing and adherence to meals per labor hour (MPLH) guidelines.
  • 30% – Employee Supervision & Training: Interview, train, evaluate and supervise kitchen employees; direct work efficiently and effectively; schedule and adjust employee hours and assignments; address conflict to maintain a positive work environment.
  • 10% – Communication & Relationships: Maintain open communication with the Area Supervisor; serve as a resource for administrators, students, parents, teachers, other managers and the community; attend departmental meetings and training events.

Additional Qualifications / Competencies
  • Self‑directed with ability to work independently.
  • Prior supervisory or leadership experience strongly desired.
  • Knowledge of food preparation techniques and kitchen safety standards.
  • Knowledge of proper sanitation practices and food safety standards.
  • Excellent customer service skills and commitment to positive customer experience.
Supervisory Responsibilities

Directly supervises up to six employees in the school kitchen, including Kitchen Specialist I, II, and Roving Kitchen Specialist employees.
