The Department of Kinesiology is seeking to fill multiple areas within the program of Exercise Science. The Assistant Professor will primarily teach undergraduate and graduate classes in the Department of Kinesiology to a diverse group of students who could potentially be Exercise Science, Physical Education, Sport Administration, and Sport and Performance Psychology majors. The faculty member will also engage in scholarly activity at the R2 level, seek external funding, serve on committees at all levels of faculty governance, provide academic advising to students, chair and serve on thesis committees, and maintain collaborative relationships within and outside the Department, including community outreach. Primary teaching responsibilities and specific assignments will depend upon Department needs and priorities.

Overview

The Department of Kinesiology is in the College of Health and Human Services at California State University, Fresno. The Department is one of the largest on campus and has approximately 1,000 undergraduate students pursuing Bachelor’s degrees in Kinesiology. Undergraduate Kinesiology degrees include Exercise Science, Physical Education, and Sport Administration. In addition, the Department has approximately 75 graduate students pursuing Master’s degrees in either Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Sport and Performance Psychology, or Sport Administration. The faculty are diverse, student-oriented, and committed to a collegial working environment.

New hires receive reduced teaching loads for the first two academic years. After that, a typical teaching load is 12 units per semester, with opportunities to apply for reassignment or release time. Faculty initiatives are broad and collaborative with colleagues from across the University. The department has supported faculty in expanding state-of-the-art equipment and lab space to enhance teaching and research in exercise science.

Qualifications

Required Education

  • Terminal doctoral degree in Kinesiology or a closely related field from an accredited institution is required.
  • Applicants nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered, but the doctoral degree must be completed by Aug 1, 2027.

Required Experience

  • College-level teaching in academic areas directly related to Kinesiology, preferably with an emphasis in clinical exercise physiology and/or cardiovascular physiology and/or functional anatomy.
  • Experience in scholarly activities.

Required Teaching Qualifications

The successful candidate must also be able to teach in one or more of the following areas:

  • Clinical exercise physiology and/or cardiovascular physiology
  • Functional anatomy
  • General exercise science/exercise physiology courses

*Specific instructional assignments will depend upon Department needs and priorities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two or more years of full-time teaching at the college or university level in an area directly related to Kinesiology or sports medicine, and the job description.
  • Teaching experience at the graduate level.
  • Ability to advise students towards clinical careers such as clinical exercise physiology, physical therapy, athletic training, or other clinical health professions.
  • PhD with clinical experience and/or research experience in one of the following areas:
  • Clinical exercise physiology with a focus on EKG interpretation.
  • Cardiovascular physiology
  • Functional anatomy
  • Sports Medicine

Certifications and Licenses

  • Appropriate professional certifications and/or licenses in the area of clinical exercise physiology (e.g., Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, or equivalent).
  • National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification, Inc. (NATABOC)
  • American Physical Therapy Association (APTA)
  • Evidence of external funding pursuit and/or success; clinical experience or research experience in cardiovascular physiology.
  • Post-doctoral work with the ability to obtain external funding.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a 12-unit teaching load per semester while maintaining a research agenda and service commitments.
