Job summary

The City of Dayton is seeking an experienced Kiln Operator Lead to oversee the total operation of a lime kiln on an assigned shift. This role requires strong supervision skills and the ability to make independent judgments to keep the kiln running efficiently.

Responsibilities include supervising Kiln Operator I, collecting data on lime and carbon dioxide production, and ensuring safety standards. A valid Ohio EPA Water Supply I certification must be obtained within 24 months of appointment.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• 2 years hands-on experience in operation/maintenance of water/wastewater treatment, pumping, or food processing facilities; rotary kilns preferred.
• Alternatively 6 months as Kiln Operator I with Ohio EPA Water Supply I certification.
• Valid driver's license and ability to maintain as a condition of continued employment.
• Must obtain Ohio EPA Water Supply I certification within 24 months of appointment.

Responsibilities

• Lead the total operation of a lime kiln on an assigned shift.

• Exercise independent judgment to prevent malfunctions and oversee equipment.
• Monitor equipment, perform routine adjustments or repairs, and collect production data (lime and CO2).

Responsibilities

Acts as the lead person responsible for the total operation of a lime kiln and directly supervises the work of the Kiln Operator I on an assigned shift. Must exercise considerable independent judgment to satisfactorily oversee the operation of the lime kiln, and be alert to prevent malfunctioning of equipment either through repair work or use of auxiliary power units. Incumbent ensures efficient operation of all equipment, makes necessary routine adjustments or repairs, monitors various pieces of equipment throughout the plant and collects data relative to lime and carbon dioxide production.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Graduation from high school (or G.E.D.).

Experience

• Two years of hands‑on experience and knowledge gained from working in the operation and maintenance of a Water Treatment Plant, Wastewater Treatment Plant, Pumping Facility or Food Processing Facility. Experience with components of rotary kilns preferred; OR
• Six months of experience as a Kiln Operator I AND a valid Ohio EPA Water Supply I certification.

License Requirements

Must possess a valid driver's license, at time of appointment, and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment.

General Requirements

Must not be colorblind.

Special Requirements

Must obtain a valid Ohio EPA Water Supply I certification within 24 months of appointment/promotion and maintain as a term and condition of continued employment.

Promotional Qualifications

Must be a full-time permanent or part‑time permanent employee in pay grade 118 (Wage) or below, pay grade 25 (Clerical) or below, or equivalent, and been employed for 6 consecutive months by the City of Dayton in a classified Civil Service position. Identical scores will be broken by (1) seniority and (2) random selection method.

Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job‑related medical examination and providing documentary evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity. Identical scores will be broken by a random selection method.

Background Check

Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a drug screen. Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening.
