Job summary

The City of Casper is seeking a dedicated Kennel Technician for Metro Animal Services on a part-time basis. You will care for dogs and other animals, maintain cleanliness, assist with intakes and adoptions, and support the public with fees and facility policies.

Responsibilities include feeding, medicating, monitoring health, recording data in databases, managing inventory, and representing the city with professionalism.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED; must be at least 18 years old.
• Minimum six months experience in customer service preferred.
• Willingness to obtain Euthanasia Technician certification.
• Registration from the Wyoming State Board of Pharmacy within 12 months of hire.
• Valid Wyoming driver's license preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform cleaning and disinfection of animal holding areas and facility.
• Assist with stray animal intake; evaluate adoption potential; process fees and paperwork.
• Count money in cash drawers at shift start/end; ensure adequate change.
• Care for animals: administer medications, microchips, vaccinations, monitor wounds, exercise dogs.
• Enter information into databases and monitor inventory; maintain records.
• Provide general customer service and explain fees, policies, rules, and facility information.
• Run errands, including taking animals to veterinary appointments.
• Represent the City of Casper professionally while interacting with the public and staff.
• Perform other duties of similar nature as assigned.

Incumbents are responsible for the cleanliness and appearance of the Metro Animal Services facility.

REPORTING STRUCTURE

Receives direction from the Metro Animal Services Manager or higher-level management staff.

• Performs a variety of custodial type duties involving the cleanliness and appearance of the facility including but not limited to cleaning and disinfecting animal holding areas.
• Assists customers with stray animal intake; evaluates animals for adoption potential; collects adoption fees, and completes paperwork and data entry as necessary.
• Counts money in cash drawers at the beginning and end of shifts to ensure that amounts are correct and there is adequate change available.
• Cares for animals which include: administering medications, microchips, vaccinations, monitoring wounds and injuries, and exercising dogs.
• Monitors the health of animals and reports sick, injured or unhealthy animals to immediate supervisor.
• Enters information into applicable databases and/or other computerized systems to collect and maintain records and information.
• Monitors supply inventory levels and reports needed supplies to immediate supervisor.
• Provides general customer service and communicates with the public regarding fees, policies, rules and general information about the facility, operations and/or event.
• Runs business related errands to various locations, including taking animals to veterinary appointments.
• Represents the City of Casper by responding to the public, citizens, its employees, and others in a prompt, professional, and courteous manner while continuously maintaining a positive customer service demeanor.
• Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Knowledge (position requirements at entry):

Abilities (position requirements at entry):

• Work a variety of shifts including weekends, nights, and holidays as needed.

• Perform euthanasia on selected animals.

• Cleaning and sanitizing kennels and other areas of the facility.
• Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
• Maintain a neat and professional appearance.
• Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
• Follow written and verbal instructions and direction.
• Follow all City safety rules and procedures and immediately report all accidents/incidents or unsafe conditions to a supervisor.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

• High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) required.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Minimum of six (6) months experience working in a customer service capacity preferred.

LICENSING and CERTIFICATIONS

• Possession of, or ability to obtain, certification as a Euthanasia Technician through the State of Wyoming, preferred.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain, a registration from the Wyoming State Board of Pharmacy, within twelve (12) months of hire.
• Possession of a valid Wyoming Driver’s License preferred.

Physical and Environmental Conditions:

City of Casper employees in data creation and modification, security sensitive or safety and protective positions are subject to pre‑employment drug testing. Some employees may be subject to random drug testing if their responsibilities include:

• Emergency response/rescue
• Handling or working with hazardous materials, including chemicals as well as solid and liquid waste
• Operating or maintaining water and wastewater systems
• Writing or modifying code, maintaining, or modifying City data systems including work on networks, servers, and communication systems
• CDL operations and driving
• Operating power‑driven machinery or equipment
• Creating or modifying health, financial, security and or risk documents or assessments
• Working with or directing minors

Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up‑to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up‑to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects. Incumbents must have sufficient physical strength, mobility, and stamina to lift and/or move heavy animals and objects such as food bags, the dexterity and confidence to administer medications, being physical and mentally able to perform euthanasia of animals, the ability to monitor animals for signs of distress or disease, and is able to deal with animals even when they are stressed, ill or in pain. Incumbents will walk or stand for extended periods of time; frequently working in a bent position. May be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises such as continuous dog barking and animal feces. May be exposed to bites, scratches, and contagious diseases.
