Job summary

The State of South Carolina, through the SCHP, is seeking a lateral-entry K-9 Handler to serve the Low-State Region including Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, and surrounding counties. The role involves patrol duties, canine handling for drug detection and tracking, and daily investigative reporting.

Candidates must have a high school diploma, at least three years of certified law enforcement service, and possess the required rank by the closing date.

Qualifications

• High school diploma required
• Three (3) years of certified law enforcement service time
• Must hold rank of SCHP Senior Trooper, Lance Corporal or Master Trooper by closing date
• No current disciplinary suspensions or ongoing investigations
• Residency within four months of effective date as per policy

Responsibilities

• Patrols and enforces SC motor vehicle laws and investigates traffic collisions
• Directs canine in detecting controlled substances and tracking; trains and cares for assigned patrol canine
• Maintains daily/weekly/monthly reports, citations, warrants and other criminal documents; may prosecute or act as prosecuting witness when required
• Maintains equipment and gear assigned by the department; handles public funds and seized property
• Oversees canine training, care and deployment; assists other agencies with canine detection and tracking
