Job summary

Dallas Independent School District is seeking a SPED Self Contained Teacher Assistant to support K-5 students with special needs. You will assist in preparing instructional materials, maintaining an orderly classroom, and supporting teachers with records and reports.

You will work with students with disabilities, assist with personal care, and help supervise students throughout the day, including during meals and recreation.

Qualifications

• Reliable high school or higher education credentials.
• Paraprofessional certificate required.
• Training program for teacher assistants or 6 months of related work experience preferred.
• Knowledge of child growth and development and behavior.
• Ability to work with diverse groups.
• Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
• Initiative and ability to follow instructions.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to work with students with disabilities.
• Flexibility to adapt to a changing environment.

Responsibilities

• Help teacher prepare instructional materials and classroom displays.
• Maintain a neat, orderly classroom and prepare it according to student needs.
• Assist with inventory, care and maintenance of equipment.
• Help teacher keep administrative records and reports.
• Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
• Assist students with physical disabilities, including transfers and positioning.
• Assist with personal care and daily living activities as needed.
• Assist with classroom curriculum and activities.
• Manage student behavior and intervene when necessary.
• Support learning by working with individuals or small groups on motor skills and exercises.
• Supervise students during the school day and on lunch, bus, and playground duties.
• Inform teachers of student needs or problems and maintain confidentiality.
• Participate in staff development and attend meetings and events.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent

Associate degree or 48 college credits or equivalency assessment

Paraprofessional certificate
