Job Description

POSITION: K-5 Mathematics Specialist (12 months)

REPORTS TO: Executive Director of Elementary Education

SALARY GRADE: Salary commensurate with degree, certification, and experience

Scope of Work

A K-5 Mathematics Specialist is a career status teaching professional who has excellent teaching and leadership skills. They draw upon their teaching experience to serve as an expert resource for all mathematics teachers. The K-5 mathematics specialist has a command for the mathematics content area.

A K-5 Mathematics Specialist must be dedicated to the improvement of the teaching profession and able to provide constructive feedback and helpful solutions to other teachers without alienating or discouraging them. They should possess good observational and analytical skills and be able to offer innovative, creative solutions in difficult situations. The specialist organizes, integrates and leads the elementary math programs, as well as assists teachers in the implementation of quality math instruction for all students. The content specialist will work directly with other content specialists and district leadership to plan professional development.

Lead Instructional Coaching
  • Supports teachers and school-based teacher leaders in creating an environment conducive to effective instruction
  • Observes and provides feedback to teachers district-wide on effective instructional design, instructional delivery, and content area knowledge
Professional Development
  • Provides staff development for New Teacher Orientation and/ other district initiatives
  • Plans on-going professional development with the curriculum maps and district resource training
Lead Effective Instructional Program
  • Assists in evaluating K-5 mathematical instructional methods and programs including those mandated by the legislature and the School Board
  • Serves as a consultant in the review and selection of all textbooks, computer software, and other mathematical instructional materials for grades K-5 mathematics
  • Establishes a communication schedule and protocol for sharing district reports
  • Attends scheduled district and school level meetings as required (state level meetings may be required)
  • Organizes the finalization and updating of curriculum maps throughout the year
  • Organizes meetings with teachers for new district instructional initiatives district-wide
  • Organizes teacher focus groups as needed
  • Creates common assessments district-wide
  • Other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze and interpret periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

Computer Skills: Familiarity of basic computer operation and software. Ability to learn various computer operations required for management of student information and integration of technology in classroom instruction.

Other: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs; ability to plan and implement lessons based on the division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents; skill in oral and written communication.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk and use fingers, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to stand and reach with hands and arms. Specific visual abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Occasionally the employee will lift up to 50 lbs. such as to lift files, paper, school supplies, books, etc.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. The employee continuously interacts with the public and staff.

Education and Experience
  • Minimum five (5) years of teaching experience
  • K-5 Certification and/or Math Certification
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience leading other teachers to achieve strong academic results.
  • Excellent organizational, communication and facilitation skills
  • A Master's Degree in Education is preferred but not required.
Evaluation

Performance in this position will be evaluated regularly by the supervisor in accordance with Board Policy.
