Job summary

Northwestern Illinois Association (NIA) is a regional governmental agency providing special education support to 68 school districts in Northwestern Illinois. The Sign Language Interpreter role supports deaf or hard-of-hearing students in K-12 settings, ensuring equal access to the curriculum through accurate interpretation.

Work consists of 177 days per year, 7 hours per day, with a pay rate between $30.20 and $57.44 per hour depending on experience.

Qualifications

• Must meet Illinois State Board of Education requirements for Educational Sign Language Interpreter Approval.
• Proficiency with school-based technology and office equipment, including Microsoft Office and Google Suite.

Responsibilities

• Provide sign language interpretation: Facilitate communication between students who are deaf or hard of hearing and others within the school environment.
• Assist in educational instruction: Support classroom activities by interpreting lessons, discussions, and group interactions.
• Collaborate with staff and specialists: Work with teachers, coordinators, and other school staff to adapt instructional materials.
• Promote inclusive learning environments: Foster participation from students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
• Maintain confidentiality and professionalism: Ensure interpreted communication adheres to ethics and privacy.
• Engage in ongoing professional development: Participate in workshops and training on sign language interpretation and educational support.
