Job summary

The School Nurse at Dawson School delivers comprehensive health services for students across the K‑12 program, identifying health needs and providing direct nursing care. The role collaborates with families, staff, and healthcare partners to support learning and well‑being.

It develops individualized health care plans, coordinates health education, and ensures compliance with Colorado nursing and public health requirements, reporting to the Director of Operations.

Qualifications

• BSN and Colorado RN license required or eligible for licensure in CO.

Position Overview

The School Nurse provides comprehensive health services to support the physical, emotional, and educational well‑being of students across the K-12 program. The School Nurse serves as the school's health and nursing expert, identifying student health needs, providing direct nursing care, developing and implementing individualized health care plans, and collaborating with students, families, faculty, administrators, and healthcare providers.

The School Nurse works to identify and reduce health-related barriers to learning and helps ensure that students can safely and fully participate in the school environment. This position also supports health education, disease prevention, emergency preparedness, student wellness, and compliance with applicable Colorado nursing, education, and public health requirements.

The School Nurse reports directly to the Director of Operations. This position collabora s closely with the school leadership team, division assistants, Athletic Trainer, Director of Safety and Security, and Summer Camp Director. The School Nurse may also provide clinical guidance, consultation, and direction to faculty and staff regarding student health needs, medical procedures, and health-related protocols.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited college or university.
• Current, unrestricted Colorado Registered Nurse (RN) license through the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA).
• Current or eligible Colorado Department of Education (CDE) Special Services Provider license/endorsement as a School Nurse, as applicable.
• Current CPR and First Aid certification from a nationally recognized provider.
• Minimum of one year of professional nursing experience, preferably in pediatric, school, community health, or public health nursing.
• Experience working with children and adolescents.
• Knowledge of student health needs, chronic health conditions, medication administration, emergency care, and health care planning.
• Knowledge of applicable Colorado school health, nursing, immunization, and public health requirements.
• Valid Colorado driver's license, if required for school-related travel.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience as a school nurse in a K-12 or independent school setting.
• CDE Certification to ensure experience with IEP/504 health accommodations, state immunization laws, and vision/hearing screenings.
• Pediatric / CPR Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) for Healthcare Providers and First Aid certification. Experience in pediatrics, emergency care, or public health.
• Experience supporting students with disabilities and complex medical needs.
• Experience developing and implementing individualized health care plans and emergency action plans.
• Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary student support teams.
• Experience with electronic medical records or student health information systems.
• Familiarity with Colorado school health regulations and independent school environments.

Salary range: $70,000 - $80,000

Employment Status.

Full-time, exempt position. This position follows the school's faculty calendar (August 1–May 31) and is generally scheduled for approximately 7 hours per day, typically from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with a 30-minute lunch period. The position requires regular availability during the school day. Occasional additional hours may be required for emergencies, school events, professional development, meetings, or other school-related responsibilities.
