Job summary

Kanawha County Public Schools seeks an Educational Sign Language Interpreter to provide communication access in a pre-K through 12 setting, working with students who are deaf or hard of hearing. The role supports classrooms and extracurricular activities, interpreting receptively and expressively under the supervision of the principal.

This itinerant position carries a 200-day minimum term, non-exempt status, and pay scale commensurate with experience and education.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Certification: WVDE Paraprofessional Certificate—Educational Interpreter I/II.
• Ability to interpret effectively, receptively and expressively.
• Knowledge of deaf culture and hearing loss.
• Willingness to attend staff trainings and IEP meetings.

Responsibilities

• Provide interpreting during the school day in academic and non-academic settings with staff, peers, and other students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
• Interpret for students utilizing the student’s preferred mode of communication.
• Attend IEP Team meetings to provide information about the student’s communication abilities and needs.
• Work under the direction and supervision of the teacher/professional to whom assigned.
• Maintain positive work habits and participate in staff meetings and required trainings.
