A training period (Intern Program) is provided where the individual will learn and begin to assume responsibilities of a Juvenile Probation Officer by preparing case histories and home investigations and eventually being assigned a caseload. It is understood that the Intern Program will last for six months.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Learn functions and operating procedures of Juvenile Office and juvenile justice system.
  • Learn working relationships with various agencies including police, mental health, schools and other private agencies that render service to the Juvenile Court.
  • Under supervision of a Probation Supervisor, begins to conduct pre-sentence investigations and social histories.
  • Under supervision of a Probation Supervisor, learns to prepare and make recommendations to the Court based on Balanced and Restorative Justice (BARJ) standards.
  • After a sixth month period, will be assigned cases in which supervision is required on a regular and ongoing basis.
  • Assists in intake work as assigned by Supervisor making decisions as to where case belongs in the juvenile system.
  • Participates in on-going training and practices for certification in arrest procedures and control tactics.
  • Assists in the arrest, detention, and transportation of juvenile offenders under Court jurisdiction as necessary.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.   • Bachelor's Degree that includes an academic background of 18 credits in the behavioral and/or social sciences.
  • Minimum one (1) year prior experience providing direct service to juvenile offenders either in the form of in-home, community-based or residential settings or has prior experience as a Juvenile Probation Officer.
  • Additional consideration will be given to those applicants who have employment experience in the juvenile justice system. Applicants with prior experience in the juvenile justice field or other human service-related field would be given consideration for a Juvenile Probation Officer position rather than the Juvenile Probation Office Intern. Before any classification decision is made concerning a Juvenile Probation Officer or Intern position, a meet and discuss session will be held with appropriate union personnel.
  • Certification in arrest procedures and control tactics requires the employee to be in sufficient physical condition to be able to meet the certification requirements and engage in dynamic physical movements (running, holding, wrestling) associated with applying arrest procedures and control tactics.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
