Job summary

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Youth Services seeks a Juvenile Justice Youth Development Specialist II (Shift Supervisor) for the Suffolk Detention Unit. You will oversee youth safety, conduct, and program operations during the evening shift, guiding a team of staff and ensuring regulatory compliance.

Qualified applicants will have supervisory experience, knowledge of PYD/DBT, and strong communication skills.

Qualifications

• Must understand and apply the laws, rules and policies governing unit activities.
• Knowledge of PYD and DBT in residential youth care.
• Proven supervisory ability including planning and assigning work.
• Proficient at gathering information by examining records and interviewing.
• Capacity to interact with youth and staff under stress while staying calm.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Observe youth conduct and behavior and take action to prevent disturbances or escapes.
• Maintain custodial care and security, conducting rounds, head counts, and searches.
• Supervise and deploy up to six JJYDS I staff.
• Assist in the absence of higher-level staff and assume shift operations.
• Conduct intake and document behavioral issues; complete incident and transport logs.
• Maintain and improve shift documentation and related records.
• Provide crisis management and group facilitation to develop life skills.
• Lead by example and participate in staff meetings and training.
• Orient and coach new staff on procedures and emergency responses.
