Job summary

Polk County in Des Moines, IA, seeks a security position to ensure the safety and security of residents, staff, and visitors at a juvenile detention facility. You will control access, monitor cameras, manage youth movements, and maintain logs.

Responsibilities include emergency response, intercom and alarm system operation, incident reporting, and shift briefings. Training and certifications are required, with eligibility for advancement within county services.

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or equivalent is required.
• Three years of relevant work experience in an institutional setting is required.
• An Associate's Degree in Human Services, psychology, sociology, criminal justice or related field is acceptable.
• One year of relevant work experience in an institutional setting is acceptable.
• Any equivalent combination of education and experience will provide the required knowledge and abilities.

Responsibilities

• Ensure safety and security of residents, staff, and visitors in a juvenile detention facility.
• Control access and movement inside the secured facility and monitor via cameras and alarms.
• Screen visitors and verify identifications; manage visits and provide facility information.
• Monitor youth movements and log activities; maintain daily logs and reports.
• Respond to emergencies and coordinate with law enforcement, EMS, and fire departments as needed.
• Operate and maintain communication systems, intercoms, radios, and alarm panels.
• Observe behavior, report incidents and safety hazards to management.
• Prepare daily activity logs and brief incoming shifts.
• Assist with admissions, releases, transportation of youth as required.
• Attend mandatory training and perform general housekeeping of work area.
• Possibly transport youth outside the facility and perform duties of Youth Service Worker as needed.
• Permitted to work evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
• Maintain compliance with Safe Crisis Management, CPR/First Aid, and required certifications.
