Job summary

Merced County in California is seeking qualified candidates for Juvenile Institutions Officer I/II to supervise and guide youth in detention settings.

The role requires high school completion, a valid California driver’s license, and at least one year of juvenile supervision experience. Training and certifications must be completed within the first year of employment. Extra-Help positions pay hourly and have limited benefits.

Qualifications

• Equivalent to high school graduation.
• Possess a valid California driver's license at time of appointment.
• One year of experience supervising juveniles; one year of college may substitute for the experience.
• Must complete within 12 months: California Penal Code 832 certification; Basic Juvenile Institutions Officers Core course.

Responsibilities

• Observes and assists or admits and releases juveniles per procedures.
• Orients juveniles to Juvenile Hall routines and rules.
• Supervises hygiene, table habits, clothing and living areas.
• Teaches work skills and games; plans recreational activities.
• Supervises juveniles during housekeeping and grounds activities.
• Transports juveniles to/from court, hospitals, and other facilities as needed.
• Writes incident, adjustment and release reports; enforces discipline and maintains security.
• Uses force when necessary to stop or restrain a combative youth.
