Job summary

VHB is seeking a Data Scientist (Transportation Safety) to join our Metro DC or North Carolina offices. You will mine and analyze large datasets, apply statistical and machine-learning methods, and develop visualizations to support roadway safety and planning projects for state DOTs, federal agencies, and local governments.

The ideal candidate has a masters in a quantitative field, 0-2 years of relevant analytics experience, and proficiency with Python, R, SQL, Tableau, Power BI, and Excel.

Qualifications

• 0-2 years of experience with advanced analytics in either an academic or professional setting.
• Master’s degree in Transportation Engineering, Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or equivalent discipline; or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

• Mine and analyze structured and unstructured data to identify patterns, trends, and risk factors.
• Apply statistical and machine-learning methods to transportation safety and planning problems.
• Evaluate model fit and predictive performance and assess uncertainty, bias, and limitations.
• Prepare and distribute analytical findings through effective visualizations, reports, and presentations.
• Work with the manager and senior data scientists to receive direction on methods and interpretation.
