Job summary

General Motors R&D is seeking a System Safety Researcher to advance safety analyses, safety cases, and evidence-based decision-making for complex, safety-critical systems. You will collaborate across engineering, AI/ML, functional safety, cybersecurity, and product safety to strengthen traceability and evidence quality.

You will contribute to research on safety arguments, evidence sufficiency, and regulatory alignment, while supporting product evolution and enterprise safety objectives.

Qualifications

• Advanced technical degree with graduation between Aug 2026 and Jun 2027.
• Full-time, 40 hours per week commitment.
• US citizenship or Green Card holder.
• Experience in systems engineering, system safety, or safety assurance.
• Experience developing/assessing safety cases or structured safety arguments.
• Knowledge of ISO 26262, ISO 21448, UL 4600 and related safety standards.

Responsibilities

• Develop and improve system safety analyses and safety cases for complex products.
• Define evaluation approaches, review evidence, identify gaps, and recommend actions.
• Author safety-case materials for product submissions, audits, and regulatory audiences.
• Integrate evidence across engineering, AI/ML, cybersecurity, and validation.
• Assess impact of changes on safety claims and update supporting evidence.
• Improve traceability and automate safety-evidence collection across lifecycles.
• Identify safety gaps and drive timely escalation and resolution through forums.
• Align safety-case claims with UL 4600, ISO 26262, ISO 21448, and related guidance.
• Research AI/ML safety validation, probabilistic safety arguments, and evidence sufficiency; synthesize findings.
