Job summary

WSP is seeking an Early Career Substation Drafter in Overland Park, Kansas (with Joplin, MO consideration). You will learn CAD standards, apply drafting practices, and assist in substation design under supervision, collaborating with engineers to produce precise drawings and comply with client and regulatory requirements.

Ideal candidates have an Associate degree in drafting or related field, basic CAD experience (AutoCAD/MicroStation), and strong communication skills.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; 0–1 year drafting/design support experience.
• Associate/technical degree in drafting or related field preferred.
• Familiar with drafting principles, codes, and documentation.
• Ability to learn client standards and follow procedures.
• Excellent written and verbal communication; able to work with cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

• Assist with data collection from sites and drawings to support drafting and design activities.
• Draft and design substation projects including physical/civil layouts and schematics or wiring diagrams.
• Use 3D CAD software to prepare precise drawings under supervision; ensure adherence to standards.
• Provide basic technical design support using GD&T, tolerances, and quantity calculations.
• Verify calculations and contract plans; escalate issues for resolution.
• Collaborate with engineers and other professionals on project phases and tasks.
• Prepare multiple design versions for review and ensure dimensions and materials meet contract requirements.
