Uni-Systems Engineering in Plymouth, MN is seeking an entry-level Structural Engineer to apply engineering principles to operable structures and custom projects. Qualifications

  • U.S. person under ITAR due to export-controlled data.
  • ABET-accredited degree in Civil/Structural Engineering (B.S. or M.S.).
  • Plan to take Fundamentals Exam.
  • Knowledge of current Civil/Structural codes and requirements.
  • Experience with engineering software SAP2000, StaadPro, Risa3D, SolidWorks, SolidWorks Simulation, ANSYS, or MATHCAD.
  • Ability to think outside the box and solve complex structural design problems.
  • Strong communication and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Conceptual and detailed structural design with design development.
  • Estimate weights and members for proposals.
  • Produce structural calculations and drawings; perform shop and field inspections.
  • Coordinate with drafters and engineers inside and outside the company.
  • Monitor design costs and schedules to meet budgets; facilitate client communication.
  • Support project engineering from design through installation and commissioning.
  • Visit manufacturing/vendor sites to inspect and communicate expectations.
  • Provide technical expertise to support Uni-Systems Engineering Sales & Marketing.
  • Drive continuous improvement in quality and performance.

**This position requires access to export-controlled technical data subject to U.S. export control laws (including ITAR). Therefore, candidates must qualify as a U.S. person under ITAR (U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident).

Job Summary

Uni-Systems Engineering is looking for a motivated entry-level engineer that is interested in working in an atypical Structural position using engineering principles and applying them to custom operable systems. This individual will have the opportunity to play a key role in creating world-renown operable structures that are highly visible to the public eye.

This individual will perform design and engineering tasks, and coordinate work with drafters and engineers both within and outside the company. Responsibilities include frame and FEM analysis, CAD modelling and drafting, and engineering hand calculations:

The person in this role may be responsible for project engineering on small to medium-sized project scopes from design development through installation and commissioning.

Responsibilities
  • Discipline-specific responsibilities include:
    • Conceptual structural design
    • Estimating weights, members, and details for proposal preparation
    • Detailed design development utilizing structural methods, software, building codes, and client specifications
    • Structural calculation and drawing production
    • Shop and field structural inspections
    • Stay current with codes and requirements that apply to specific engineering disciplines
  • Actively participate in scheduled design reviews with contractor, architect, engineering consultants, and other project team members
  • Provide project status updates for Project Review Meetings and other company meetings
  • If applicable, monitor project design costs and progress to ensure that approved project budget and schedule goals are achieved. Facilitate client communication
  • Assist in prototype development, implementation, and documentation
  • Visit manufacturing/vendor sites to inspect and communicate expectations
  • Provide technical expertise to support Uni-Systems Engineering Sales & Marketing Efforts
  • Drive continuous improvement by finding ways to enhance quality and performance with shop and field assembly, adjustment, function, aesthetics, costs, and maintenance
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must qualify as a U.S. person under ITAR due to access to export-controlled technical data.
  • B.S. degree in Civil/Structural Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution, or M.S. degree in Civil/Structural Engineering from institution with an ABET-accredited undergraduate program
  • Plan to take Fundamentals Exam
  • Knowledge of current codes and requirements that apply to the Civil/Structural Engineering discipline
  • Understanding of engineering software (SAP2000, StaadPro, Risa3D, SolidWorks, SolidWorks Simulation, ANSYS, and/or MATHCAD)
  • Ability to think outside the box
  • Desire to understand the behavior behind and solve complex structural design problems including large machine design, structural dynamics/statics, system stiffness, load distribution, failure modes, and related system integration tasks
  • Effective in using analysis and design software that is relevant to the business
  • Can organize, plan, and prioritize work to meet deadlines
  • Communicate effectively with management, employees, vendors, and customers
  • Strong attention to detail in completing work
  • Applies sound judgment and critical thinking skills to complex projects and business challenges
Preferred Qualifications
  • M.S. degree in Civil/Structural Engineering
  • E.I.T. certified
  • 3D Modeling and FEA software experience
  • Experience in managing risks
  • Previous experience of innovating and creatively solving multifaceted problems
  • Experience using SAP2000, StaadPro, Risa3D, SolidWorks, SolidWorks Simulation, ANSYS, and/or MATHCAD
  • Knowledge of fabrication techniques and machine shop experience
  • Exposure to mechanical equipment/systems and/or a general aptitude for being hands-on
