Job summary

KBR is seeking a Junior Geometric Calibration Engineer to support Landsat calibration and validation efforts. You will help monitor and calibrate Landsat geometry, develop tools and algorithms, and contribute to data quality assessments and publications.

The role requires hands-on analysis, programming in Python/IDL/Matlab/C/C++, and collaboration with the ECCOE team. Hybrid work in Sioux Falls, SD is offered with eligibility for remote options.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of progressive experience in an engineering role.
• Experience with Landsat data calibration or Cal/Val workflows is a plus.
• Strong programming skills in Python, IDL, Matlab, and C/C++.

Responsibilities

• Ensure Landsat geometry is continually monitored, measured, and calibrated.
• Develop and verify tools and algorithms for Landsat data and instrument calibrations.
• Characterize geometric performance to meet requirements and report data quality.
• Present geometry status at meetings and with Landsat Program Management.
• Support user questions and handle data requests related to Landsat geometry.

Junior Geometric Calibration Engineer

KBR’s Science and Space Division is seeking a Junior Geometric Calibration Engineer to support the USGS Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center’s EROS Calibration/Validation Center of Excellence (ECCOE) project. The Junior Geometric Calibration Engineer for Landsat Calibration and Validation (Cal/Val) activities is responsible for executing the Sensor Geometric and Spatial Characterization and Calibration of the Landsat 1-9 satellites.

Core Responsibilities

• Ensure the geometry of Landsat data are continually and promptly monitored, measured, and calibrated
• Develop and verify tools and algorithms to assist in Landsat data and instrument calibrations
• Characterize the geometric performance of the Landsat instruments to ensure that all geometric requirements are being met
• Report on the quality of Landsat data as required
• Present Landsat geometry status at assigned meetings and regular updates for the Landsat Program Management
• Answer user services questions regarding Landsat data
• Process data for public relations requests that come from USGS Project Management
• Provide geometric data quality expertise to the Landsat Project anomaly resolution teams
• Develop and verify tools and algorithms and perform qualitative analysis that results in improved Landsat data products
• Write and publish white papers and journal articles as needed
• Present analysis results at professional conferences and workshops
• Participate in peer reviews
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Landsat Cal/Val Team Lead

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, System Characterization, Signal Processing, System Calibration, Photogrammetry, Geodesy, Mathematics, or Satellite Systems
• 3+ years of progressive experience in an engineering role

Desired Skills

• Experience in writing SQL queries
• Programming skills in Python, IDL, Matlab, and in C or C++
• Knowledge of spacecraft and spacecraft instrument dynamics and characteristics
• Knowledge of spacecraft and instrument requirements
• Knowledge of image/signal processing and statistical analysis fundamentals
• Knowledge of map projections
• Ability to develop image and signal processing techniques and tools
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
• Ability to think independently
• Ability to handle complex multitask environments
• Familiarity with configuration management principles and procedures
• Knowledge of geodesy, system calibration/characterization, satellite systems, and remote sensing
• Thorough understanding of view angle geometries and/or orbital geometry
• Knowledge of cloud data processing
• Preference will be given to anyone with experience in satellite ground systems, remote sensing data capture, processing, archive, distribution, and scientific applications

Work Location

• This position supports a team anchored in Sioux Falls, SD, and is offered in a hybrid remote/onsite work environment. Fully remote work will be considered for the right candidate.
• Three years of continuous residency in the US for issuance of a Government Security credential is required.
