Job summary

Colorado State Public Defender seeks an Investigator I to learn and apply policies, procedures, and investigative techniques under direct supervision. You will organize case files, assist with witness interviews, gather records, and support defense strategies with thorough documentation.

Travel within Colorado is frequent and you will coordinate with attorneys on case status, court dates and evidence collection while developing competency for Investigator II.

Qualifications

• Learns procedures and develops skills in organizing and preparing case files to effectively manage assigned investigations.
• Reviews and organizes discovery and meets with attorneys and clients to gather information relevant to locating and interviewing witnesses.
• Develops skills and practice habits to maintain thorough documentation of all aspects of work performed.
• Maintains understanding of ethical issues implicated in work performed, and consults with attorneys as required.

Responsibilities

• Learns procedures and develops skills in organizing and preparing case files to manage investigations.
• Prepares for investigations and witness interviews, reviews discovery, and meets with attorneys and clients to gather information.
• Collaborates with defense team to establish strategy and discuss applicable case law and ethical considerations.
• Maintains regular communications with attorneys to provide status updates and coordinate timelines.
• Develops thorough documentation of all work and maintains records of interviews and fieldwork.
• Assists in preparing exhibits for trial and coordinating with witnesses and travel arrangements when needed.
• Learns court procedures and supports sentencing preparation, including researching placement options.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
