Job summary

Hachette Book Group's Artisan Books division in New York seeks a junior designer who can translate complex ideas into beautiful, functional books across cookbooks, lifestyle and how‑to titles.

You will collaborate with editors, illustrators, and designers, develop multiple concepts for covers and interiors, manage several projects at once, and polish layouts with a keen eye for typography.

Qualifications

• BFA preferred
• Approximately 1–3 years of experience in illustrated book design
• Strong knowledge of Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator
• Portfolio shows ideation, design, and typography skills
• Knowledgeable of book traditions and typographic conventions
• Strong time management and follow-through skills
• Great attitude and team player

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with senior designers and editors to create several concepts for a new book’s cover and interior
• Research, hire, and communicate with illustrators and photographers
• Resolve design issues to keep projects on schedule
• Design mechanicals, make reprint corrections, and prepare titles for production
• Review and correct proofs with senior staff
• Attend weekly production and art meetings with the publisher
