Job summary

The Clerk’s Office of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in San Francisco seeks an Operations Supervisor to oversee multiple departments, improve case flow, and support the federal Judiciary’s mission.

The successful candidate will lead teams, manage calendars and materials, analyze processes, train staff, and partner with judges' chambers and other courts to deliver accurate, timely operations.

Qualifications

  • Six years of progressively responsible administrative or operational experience (three in management) in public service, legal, or comparable fields.
  • Proven leadership, motivation, and development of teams.
  • Highly organized and detail oriented.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, including advising senior leaders and briefing complex matters.
  • Ability to resolve personnel matters and manage high-volume, deadline-driven environment.
  • Proficiency with legal case management or workflow systems.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise multiple departments within the Clerk’s Office, including calendar and case materials units.
  • Oversee case flow, assign cases to oral argument calendars, analyze efficiency, and implement improvements.
  • Ensure data quality and refine recusal system and case materials processes.
  • Develop and deliver training for existing, new, and changing programs.
  • Manage staffing, workload, and performance, and conduct staff evaluations.
  • Set priorities and deadlines, coordinating with subordinates and other teams.
  • Interpret Administrative Office directives and court rules affecting the Clerk’s Office.
  • Compile and present statistical information and reports for the court and leadership.
  • Maintain relations with Judges’ chambers.
  • Promote morale and collaboration with judges, management, court personnel, other courts, and agencies to improve case flow.
