Job summary

State of Delaware in Wilmington is seeking an entry level Court Clerk/Case Manager for the Court of Chancery. The role covers learning court processes, caseload management, and assisting the judge by preparing the courtroom and exhibits, sometimes traveling to Dover or Georgetown for events.

You will handle case data, maintain records, and support judicial officers with various case events to ensure smooth proceedings.

Qualifications

  • Six months experience in managing cases through the legal process.
  • Six months experience applying laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Six months experience using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.
  • Knowledge of narrative report writing.

Responsibilities

Job description

Summary Statement

This is the entry level of caseload management work in the Court of Chancery, learning the legal processes and procedures and case management functions while performing the full range of case management activities within the Court. This position also must perform Court Clerk duties to prepare the courtroom for the judge for a court proceeding. The Court Clerk duties may require travel to Dover or Georgetown to cover in-court events and secure the trial exhibits for storage by the Register in Chancery.

Career Ladder

An employee will become eligible for consideration to move to the next level of the career ladder after one year within this classification once he or she meets the minimum qualifications and performance requirements for the higher level and possesses the ability to perform at that level. The judicial case manager career ladder incorporates levels I, II, and III.

Essential Functions
  • Assessing case filings to determine placement in case track/program or recommends referral to alternative case tracks.
  • Interprets and applies court rules, laws and procedural requirements for case events and case flow management.
  • Monitors and coordinates case activity through multiple legal events and processes.
  • Tracks case events/status anticipates case flow problems/causes for delay and initiates appropriate action to expedite cases effectively and efficiently including contacting participants to resolve issues that inhibit case flow.
  • Develops case management procedures to ensure effective case management.
  • Advises judicial officers regarding various case events that ultimately lead to final case disposition.
  • Coordinates case activity and events with judicial officers, attorneys, law enforcement agencies and litigants.
  • Resolves technical case processing issues requiring research of case data and coordinating activities with other agencies and courts.
  • Research case files, records, and other sources of information to ensure accuracy of case data, prepare and issue court documents and resolve discrepancies and issues related to case flow.
  • Establishes and maintains contacts with the legal community, other agencies, and courts/units, both externally and internally, to ensure case flow is expedited.
  • Enters case data into automated case management systems; prepares and maintains case files and records.
  • Prepare the courtroom for the judge, record exhibits, swear in witnesses, set up technical equipment, and other court-related duties.
  • Must have the ability to multi-task and prioritize work, be helpful, courteous, congenial and respectful but also be an authority figure when necessary while handling Court events.
  • Travel to Dover and Georgetown may be required. Securing the trial exhibits for storage by the Register in Chancery.
Job Requirements
  • Six months experience in managing cases as they move through the legal process.
