Job summary

The Aerospace Science Instructor (ASI) at Skyview High School works with the SASI to lead the high school Air Force JROTC unit, focusing on leadership education, drill, health and wellness, and day-to-day cadet operations. It mentors cadets in character, citizenship, and leadership skills.

Responsibilities include teaching leadership courses, PT, assisting with aerospace modules, and evaluating cadet performance, while managing logistics and extracurricular activities in coordination with school

Qualifications

  • Military service: Retired NCO or Senior NCO (E-6 through E-9) from USAF/Space Force/AF Reserve/ANG with 20+ years of active service.
  • Certification: Official AFJROTC ASI certification prior to employment.
  • Education: High school diploma or GED; Bachelor's/Associate degree preferred.
  • Teaching credential: Ability to obtain state JROTC teaching credentials/license per district guidelines.
  • Background check: FBI fingerprinting and local background checks required.
  • Physical fitness: Able to lead outdoor fitness activities and marching while meeting AF standards.

  • Instruct the AFJROTC Health and Wellness/Physical Fitness program (PT).

The Aerospace Science Instructor (ASI) works in close partnership with the Senior Aerospace Science Instructor (SASI) to lead the high school Air Force JROTC unit. Primarily responsible for leadership education, drill and ceremonies, health and wellness instruction, and day-to-day cadet operations, the ASI acts as a primary mentor in developing character, citizenship, self-discipline, and leadership skills in high school students.

Qualifications & Requirements:
  • Military Service: Retired Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) or Senior NCO (E-6 through E-9) from the USAF, Space Force, Air Force Reserve, or Air National Guard with a minimum of 20 years of active service.
  • Certification: Official certification as an ASI from Headquarters AFJROTC (Holm Center) prior to employment.
  • Education: High school diploma or GED required; Bachelor's or Associate degree preferred.
  • Teaching Credential: Ability to obtain state JROTC teaching credentials/license per local district guidelines.
  • Background Check: Must clear FBI fingerprinting, local background checks, and school district hiring standards.
  • Physical Fitness: Capable of leading outdoor fitness activities, marching in drill, and upholding Air Force weight and physical standards.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Teach AFJROTC Leadership Education courses, including military drill, customs and courtesies, flag etiquette, financial management, communication skills, and citizenship.
  • Instruct the AFJROTC Health and Wellness / Physical Fitness Program (PT).
  • Assist the SASI in delivering Aerospace Science academic modules as assigned.
  • Evaluate cadet performance in leadership traits, uniform standards, academic coursework, and drill precision.
Cadet Operations & Supply Management
  • Manage unit logistics, including ordering, issuing, fitting, cleaning, and accounting for cadet uniforms and equipment.
  • Support the SASI with administrative tracking in WINGS (Web-based Instructor Management and Cadet System).
  • Supervise cadet staff in logistics, public affairs, and administrative roles to teach practical supply and personnel management skills.
  • Assist in maintaining audit-ready unit inventory and financial tracking records.
Co-Curricular & Extracurricular Activities
  • Serve as primary advisor or coach for Leadership Development Requirements (LDRs), such as Drill Team, Color Guard, Raider Team, Saber Team, or Marksmanship.
  • Plan, organize, and supervise cadet participation in local parades, flag details, community service events, and drill competitions.
  • Chaperone overnight field trips, Curriculum-in-Action (CIA) visits, and summer Cadet Leadership Courses (CLC).
  • Serve as a positive role model, establishing high standards of conduct, integrity, and personal appearance.
  • Collaborate with school staff, parents, and community partners to support cadet academic success and personal growth.
  • Participate in school faculty responsibilities, staff meetings, and campus safety duties as assigned.
