Job summary

Matlen Silver is seeking a Unix/Linux system engineer to join our Chandler, AZ team onsite three days a week. You will contribute to reducing server vulnerabilities by leading patch management, OS upgrades, and core ancillary installations across a large enterprise environment.

Responsibilities

• Execute and oversee server patching during maintenance windows using BladeLogic and scripts.
• Perform pre-checks and post-checks to ensure patching success and system stability.
• Communicate regularly with application production support, platform engineering and L3 teams.
• Troubleshoot patch/server failures and coordinate remediation with global teams.
• Develop scripts in BladeLogic to automate OS patching across multiple systems.
• Document and maintain operational procedures.
• Partner with Global Markets client support to understand applications.

Summary

Unix/Linux system engineer with strong communication skills, excellent operational execution and troubleshooting skills, experience working within enterprise environments. You will be part of a team contributing to actively reducing the number of server vulnerabilities across support scope.

The server patch management effort includes targeting, scheduling, patch installation, governance and reporting to drive risk reduction. This role is primarily focused on OS server patch and Core Ancillary upgrades & installation and the associated communication, troubleshooting and change control efforts as part of monthly patching routines.

Responsibilities

• Role will execute and oversee server patching during specified maintenance windows using a variety of mechanisms and tools including BladeLogic jobs, custom scripts and perform manual updates where required on more complex systems
• Role will execute pre-checks to help ensure successful patching events and post-checks to ensure system stability and configuration consistency
• Role will communicate regularly with application production support teams, platform engineering teams and level 3 systems operations teams
• Role will troubleshoot and resolve patch and server failures and escrow where needed. The person must be able to quickly identify network or infrastructure related problems and manage the remediation/escalation. This resource serves as a bridge in explaining symptoms and troubleshooting performed to global operations teams if necessary.
• Role will develop scripts within BladeLogic to automate operating system patching and updates across multiple systems
• Role will document and maintain operational procedures
• Responsible to develop a close partnership with Global Markets client support and have a working knowledge of their applications.

Must Haves:

• Excellent attention to detail to follow documented procedures, ability to continually offer suggestions to simplify and improve procedures
• Experience and complete working knowledge of operating system base health/welfare and x86 midrange IBM, HP, Dell hardware troubleshooting.
• Experience in diagnosing, researching and resolving system platform related issues
• Experience with Red Hat Linux 6.x, 7.x OS & Kernel, experience with Solaris
• Experience working with servers in an enterprise environment consisting of 1,500 or more servers

Nice to Haves:

• Experience with VCS & RHCS clustering solutions for Redhat Linux
• Experience with PXE, 10/40GB, Mellanox, SolarFlare Products and Technology
