Job summary

Jefferson Parish is seeking qualified applicants for a supervisory role within the Jefferson Protection and Animal Welfare Services. Qualifications

  • Meets at least ONE of the following:
  • I. Current employment and permanent civil service status with Jefferson Parish; PLUS, one year and six months of paid work experience in a classification within the Jefferson Protection & Animal Welfare Services department providing administrative support.
  • II. Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent certificate; PLUS, one year of paid work experience in a supervisory capacity at an animal facility overseeing facility operations, animal control, animal transportation logistics, emergency management, or veterinary medicine.
  • III. Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent certificate; PLUS, two years of paid work experience in one of: (i) investigating animal-related complaints and collecting stray, uncontrolled and/or diseased animals, (ii) coordinating transportation schedules, conducting animal transfers, creating rescue partnerships, and/or managing logistics, (iii) the care and handling of animals in a veterinary setting, performing complete intakes, and/or administering medications and vaccines.
  • IV. Possession of an Associate’s degree or major coursework (the successful completion of at least 15 credit hours) from an accredited college or university in Animal Health Care, Animal Behavior/Science, Animal Policy and Advocacy, Humane Leadership, or a closely related field.

  • Train, guide and direct officers; assist with court duties and other animal-related activities; may supervise JPAWS Care Attendants.
  • Responsible for daily operations of the JPAWS facility, ensuring humane treatment, safety and welfare of all animals under care.

Job description

EXAMINATION IS ANNOUNCED TO ESTABLISH AN EMPLOYMENT LIST TO FILL FOUR (4) CURRENT WEST JEFFERSON VACANCIES IN THE DEPARTMENT OF JEFFERSON PROTECTION AND ANIMAL WELFARE SERVICE AND FOR FUTURE VACANCIES AS THEY OCCUR.

Under general direction of the Director and depending on the specific vacancy, this classification may supervise subordinate staff of Humane Officers engaged in the investigation of complaints and impounding of stray, uncontrolled, or diseased animals. It may be responsible for the supervision of promoting and facilitating pet transports/transfers. May supervise the developing and implementing of enrichment and training programs to improve animal health and adaptability. Depending on the vacancy, the employee may supervise JPAWS Care Attendants and be responsible for departmental functions related to animal care, and staff management. Employees in this classification perform supervisory and administrative work. Supervises the daily operations of the JPAWS facility, ensuring humane treatment, safety, and welfare of all animals under the care of JPAWS. Position is responsible for training, guiding, and directing officers, and assisting with court duties, as well as animal related activities. Directly leads, develops, oversees and evaluates the animal behavior and enrichment teams and processes to ensure an exceptional experience for the animals in the organizations care. Performs related work as required. This position is an essential, emergency duty status worker and may not be relieved of duty when the Parish President or their designee recommends a voluntary or mandatory evacuation of Jefferson Parish. Position requires driving of a Parish vehicle, thus possession of a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record will be given preference.

The examination may consist of a written test, a rating of training and experience, an oral panel interview or any combination thereof. Acceptable applicants will be notified of the time, date, and place of any assembled testing.
