Job description

EXAMINATION IS ANNOUNCED TO ESTABLISH AN EMPLOYMENT LIST TO FILL ONE (1) CURRENT EAST JEFFERSON VACANCIES IN THE PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICE AND FOR FUTURE VACANCIES AS THEY OCCUR.

Under general supervision, develops and manages all Jefferson Parish communications related to public relations and media relations. Acts as a backup to the Public Information Officer as needed, while also providing management backup over Public Information Office team members, as needed and when requested. Manages the research, development and dissemination of information and materials through the news media and educational programs via social media, JPTV, and the Parish website. Manages media relations for the Administration and Council (by request) by drafting and disseminating official press releases, including but not limited to department updates, emergency response, closures, parish events and programs, etc.; and, with the Public Information Officer’s approval, responds to media inquiries on behalf of Jefferson Parish and drafts statements in response to media. Employee may act as a spokesperson and represent department director at Parish functions and meetings. Performs related work as required. This position is also an essential, emergency duty status worker and may not be relieved of duty when the Parish President or their designee recommends a voluntary or mandatory evacuation of Jefferson Parish. Position requires driving of a personal vehicle, thus possession of a valid driver’s license, acceptable driving record, and personal automobile with minimum liability insurance available for business use (business travel is reimbursed on a mileage basis) will be given preference.

Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework (successful completion of at least 30 credit hours) in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a closely related field; PLUS, at least five (5) years of paid work experience in media relations, journalism, or public relations.

PREFFERRED
  • Experience with Crisis Communication.
  • Experience with public speaking in a professional capacity.
  • Supervisory experience.(ENTRANCE AND PROMOTIONAL)

The examination may consist of a written test, a rating of training and experience, an oral panel interview or any combination thereof. Acceptable applicants will be notified of the time, date, and place of any assembled testing. The information is subject to verification and the Personnel Department reserves the right to determine the quality and quantity of education and experience claimed for credit.
