Job summary

MTNT seeks a Journeyman Lineman to construct, maintain, and repair distribution lines in remote Alaska communities. You will install transformers, troubleshoot systems, and operate generation equipment to ensure continuous service.

The role requires 3+ years as a journeyman, Alaska certification, and a valid Alaska driver's license (CDL-A preferred). Expect rotations and flexible schedules to support after-hours responses and outages.

Qualifications

  • Must have Highschool Diploma or GED.
  • Alaska Journeyman Lineman Certificate of Fitness or eligible within 6–12 months.
  • Completion of a lineman apprenticeship program, preferably with rural Alaska experience.
  • Minimum 3+ years as a journeyman line worker, preferably in remote utilities or isolated grids.
  • Valid Alaska driver’s license; CDL-A preferred or obtainable upon hire.
  • Working knowledge of power generation, electrical distribution, and mechanical systems.

Responsibilities

  • Construct, maintain, and repair overhead and underground distribution lines and related electrical systems.
  • Install, maintain, and troubleshoot transformers, regulators, reclosers, switches, insulators, and associated hardware.
  • Perform energized and de-energized line work using approved hot-line tools and protective equipment.
  • Operate and monitor generation systems to ensure continuous, reliable electric service.
  • Conduct scheduled and corrective maintenance on diesel engines, generators, and electrical controls.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical, mechanical, and control-system malfunctions.
  • Read and record system meters and instrumentation for billing and load tracking.
  • Patrol distribution lines, easements, and streetlights; clear vegetation and maintain right-of-way access.
  • Perform fuel transfers and generator checks, including weekend or after-hours shifts as assigned.
  • Respond to outages and emergency service calls to restore power safely and promptly.
  • Operate and maintain heavy and specialized equipment such as bucket trucks, digger derricks, and line-maintenance tools.
  • Maintain, inspect, and organize tools, equipment, and facilities for operational readiness.
  • Ensure strict adherence to all applicable safety standards (OSHA, NESC, NFPA 70E, MTNT policies).
  • Operate power-generation equipment and distribution controls to maintain stable output and system balance.
  • Perform switching, isolation, and grounding procedures during maintenance and emergency operations.
  • Train or assist apprentices and groundmen in safe and efficient line-work methods.
  • Document maintenance, inspections, and outage response per utility procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols (OSHA, NFPA 70E), and utility regulations.
