Job summary

Grand Rapids Community College is seeking a Journeyman Electrician to perform day-to-day maintenance, repairs, and projects across campus facilities. The role requires reading plans, coordinating with other trades, and ensuring safe, code-compliant electrical work.

The ideal candidate has a Journeyman license, 2+ years of experience (master license preferred), and a willingness to travel between GRCC campuses.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Journeyman license required.
  • Advancement towards master's license within two years.
  • Two years journeyman experience preferred.
  • Experience in an academic setting preferred.
  • Five years as master electrician preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and layout electrical work using blueprints and specs.
  • Coordinate work between departments and outside vendors.
  • Repair and install electrical systems and components per NEC guidelines.
  • Travel to GRCC campuses as needed.
  • Maintain documentation and complete work orders.
  • Ensure compliance with MIOSHA and building codes.

Job description

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Plan organize and layout all components of electrical work through the use of blue prints specifications interaction with consultants contractors architects etc
  • Coordinate own and others work between maintenance electrical HVAC plumbing and carpentry departments administration and outside vendors
  • Perform electrical work in medium voltage transmission and distribution systems and relays
  • Perform repair of electric motors generators and controllers ranging from fractional horsepower to 500 horsepower
  • Repair renovate and install electrical systems components fixtures or electrical equipment in accordance with applicable NEC procedures and guidelines manufacturers specifications and department guidance
  • Make repairs to operations maintenance and electronic equipment as necessary
  • Maintain files and documentation on building electrical systems as required
  • Complete all work orders assigned and provide appropriate documentation in relation to completion of work
  • Accomplish all work in accordance with MIOSHAOSHA guidance applicable City County and State building codes and regulations
  • Repair electrical systems for hydraulic equipment injections molding welding equipment HVAC systems etc
  • Repair maintain and calibrate electrically operated controls and devices such as communication devices signaling devices fire warning and security systems including building access ADA operators electronic strikes etc
  • Travel throughout all GRCC campuses and Satellite Learning Centers using personal andor company vehicles
  • Regular attendance during normal scheduled hours is required Being present is essential for serving customers and performing the essential functions of this position
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
Educational Credentials

High school degree or GED diploma required

Journeyman electrical license required

Advancement towards masters license within two 2 years

Experience

Journeyman electrician with two 2 years experience preferred

Experience in an academic setting preferred

Five 5 years of experience as a master electrician preferred

Skills

Must be able to use all electrical measuring equipmentmeters

Must be able to troubleshoot all types of electrical problems

Must be able to read and decipher blueprints

Must possess basic computer skills

Must have a valid Michigan driver license

Possess the ability to effectively communicate through written and oral communications

Physical Demands

Be able to lift 50 pounds

Bend stoop and stand for extended periods of time in completing work assignments

Must be able to use ladders

Mental Demands

Ability to work in a group or alone in a variety of settings

Ability to interface with a staff at various levels

Provide courteous customer service to students faculty staff and the general public

Must be accessible and available to meet overtimeemergency commitments to fulfill the college mission and objectives

Working Conditions

GRCC will comply with any mandated health and safety requirements Compliance information is available on our policies website

Must be able to work a 24 hour flexible schedule when required

Must be available for call in work during off duty hours

Work alone or in groups

Work indoors and outdoors as necessary

Work outdoors during inclement weather

Work with or without heat and air conditioning

Must be able to complete all assigned trainingcourses as directed by the Associate Director of Facilities Management

Travel is necessary to maintain college assets; including to Holland as needed

Use of ladders scaffolding and scissors lifts to complete overhead work

Occasional early morning starts staying late andor alternate off shift working hours will be required

Maintain a safe and clean work environment
