Job description

Overview:

Under general supervision from the Power Systems Electrical Foreman, performs work associated with the installation, operation, and maintenance of complex electrical systems related to Power Department Plants, Electrical Substations, and transmission and distribution systems.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Maintain and operate electrical substations, including transformers, circuit breakers, regulators, and related equipment.
  2. Assist in the design, installation, maintenance, inspection, testing, and repair of protective relay systems and control circuits in substations and plants.
  3. Keep logs and records of maintenance activities; update electrical circuit diagrams.
  4. Support the maintenance and operation of the SCADA system and related hardware/software.
  5. Participate in system studies such as fuse coordination and power factor correction.
  6. Assist in maintaining hydroelectric plants, including preparing reports, permits, and budgets.
  7. Perform routine and emergency switching to ensure power restoration.
  8. Support the maintenance of communication systems, including two-way radios and traffic signal controllers.
  9. Assist the Metering Department as needed.
  10. Carry a cell phone and be available for callouts at any time, including holidays and outside of regular hours.
  11. Perform other related duties as assigned.
  12. Reside within a 20-minute response area.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Problem-solving and decision-making skills based on facts and judgment.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, especially under stress.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to motivate others.
  • Thorough understanding of substations and electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of metering, relaying, power transformation, and their maintenance.
  • Practical knowledge of electrical and digital electronic theories and microprocessors.
  • Familiarity with the Electric Code and Electrical Safety Code.
  • Mathematical skills for working with exponents, geometry, and algebra in electrical applications.
  • Ability to interpret technical literature, manuals, and reports, and to write operational and maintenance documentation.
  • Effective speaking, voice, and diction skills.

Physical Requirements:

Frequent physical effort, including lifting up to 40 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally. Bending, stooping, walking, standing, and working in various weather conditions are required. Ability to operate aerial devices and climb structures is necessary.

Environmental Conditions:

Work in noisy, vibrating environments near high voltage (138 KV and below) equipment, requiring protective measures to prevent injury.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of technical schooling in electrical or electronics.
  • At least three years of experience as a Journeyman electrician.
  • Completion of an accredited Substation Technician apprenticeship and Journeyman Substation Technician certification preferred.
  • Valid Utah Class B CDL Driver's License required.
  • Successful background check and pre-employment drug test required.
