Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Perform journey-level commercial carpentry construction, maintenance and repair.
  • Work on interior and exterior areas of campus buildings as part of FPM's In-House Construction crew.
  • Collaborate with team, apply sustainable practices, and respond to campus emergencies when required.
  • Operate to PSU policies, maintain safety, and support a high-quality craftsmanship standard.

Position Summary

Facilities and Property Management (FPM) comprises approximately 80 full time and 60 student employees who work together to maintain over 5 million square feet in downtown Portland, and this team is a key element in the department. FPM is pleased to serve all members of the PSU community, and takes a tremendous amount of pride in providing a superior and vibrant learning environment. FPM is recognized as an exceptionally talented team built from a diverse group of individuals who are passionate about providing the highest levels of quality craftsmanship, customer service and teamwork through sustainable practices and who take pride in supporting the mission of the University. All facilities maintenance personnel are considered essential personnel and may be required to respond to campus emergencies, including inclement weather.

This position performs journey-level commercial carpentry construction, maintenance and repair on the interior and exterior areas of campus buildings. The position is part of the In-House Construction crew in Facilities and Property Management (FPM). This is a permanent full-time position within an innovative team-oriented environment located in downtown Portland, and includes a comprehensive benefits package with paid time off including paid sick time, paid holidays and paid vacation days, 95% employer-funded premium healthcare, 100% employer-funded retirement plans, and 70% off of tuition for the employee, dependent children, and your spouse or domestic partner. This position is represented by SEIU 89. Minimum Qualifications from Classification
  • Experience as a skilled carpenter. The experience must include form building; rough framing; outside and inside finishing; layout; care and use of tools and woodworking machinery; blueprint reading; and application of safety standards and codes; OR
  • Completion of an apprenticeship (four years) under a skilled carpenter which included experience as listed above.
Additional Minimum Qualifications for this Position
  • 2 years experience working as a journeyman level carpenter.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Successful completion of a background check.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Willing and able to wear a half mask respirator.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 5 years experience working at a journeyman carpenter level, in commercial construction or in a school or institutional environment.
  • Experience working both independently and directing non-skilled labor.
  • Various equipment operation certification or licenses.
  • HAZMAT training.
  • Journeyman card.

Total Compensation Range & Benefits Statement

The starting hourly salary rate for this position is between $25.00 and $30.11 plus a monthly recruitment and retention bonus equal to 10% of the base salary which equates to $27.50 to $33.12 per hour. The starting salary will be dependent upon the knowledge, experience, skills and abilities of the chosen candidate, the budget of the hiring department, and approval from HR. Portland State has an excellent benefits package including 95% employer-paid health insurance premiums (employees and eligible dependents) and significantly reduced tuition rates for employees and eligible dependents at any of the Oregon Public Universities. After completing six full months employees are eligible to the employer-paid pension program in addition to two voluntary retirement programs.
