Public Works Maintenance Technician

Reporting to a Public Works Operations Maintenance Supervisor and under the supervision of a Senior Technician, the Journey Level Maintenance Technician performs skilled maintenance, repair, and equipment operation for the City of Lacey Public Works Operations Divisions. Responsibilities include assisting, training, directing, and overseeing Maintenance Assistants or seasonal staff; identifying and recommending improvements to operating procedures; and completing work safely and efficiently. Employees may be assigned to various sections based on operational needs.

General Duties

1. Operate various mobile equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, excavators, loaders, septic trucks, Vactors, bobcats, sweepers, forklifts, mowers, bucket trucks, and other machinery.
2. Respond to customer complaints, diagnose problems, and resolve routine issues.
3. Perform standby duties for after-hours response in accordance with departmental policies.
4. Perform strenuous physical labor and mechanical tasks.
5. Attend required training courses on safety, performance, diversity, harassment, and emergency preparedness.
6. Use electronic systems to document work and time records.

Specific Functions

Wastewater Maintenance Technician

• Maintain and repair wastewater systems, including pump stations and odor control facilities.
• Inspect and troubleshoot system malfunctions and perform mechanical repairs.
• Maintain auxiliary generators and troubleshoot emergencies.
• Clean mains and perform repairs using hydraulic and TV equipment.
• Maintain step and grinder systems.
• Document work using electronic systems.
• Perform building and facility maintenance tasks.
• Respond to wastewater utility customer complaints.

Water or Wastewater Maintenance Technician

Requires a high school diploma or GED and two or more years’ experience in water system repair and maintenance, or equivalent experience, education, and training. Must obtain specific certifications as required.

Requirements and Certifications

• Background check, physical, and drug test.
• Valid Washington driver’s license or obtain within 30 days.
• Class A commercial driver license endorsement within 24 months.
• Flagging, first aid/CPR, Water Distribution Manager Level 1, Wastewater Collection Specialist Level I, and Cross Connection certifications within specified timeframes.

• Knowledge of repair techniques, system hydraulics, safety regulations, and city infrastructure.
• Customer service skills, equipment operation, and computer proficiency.
• Ability to work in all weather conditions, perform physical activity, and communicate effectively.
