Job Description: Journey Level Maintenance Technician

Reporting to a Public Works Operations Maintenance Supervisor, and under the daily supervision of a Senior Technician, the Journey Level Maintenance Technician performs skilled journey level maintenance, repair, and equipment operation for the City of Lacey Public Works Operations Divisions. This position includes duties such as assisting, training, directing, and overseeing Maintenance Assistants or seasonal staff, and recommending operational improvements. Employees may be assigned to various sections based on operational needs.

General Duties
  1. Operate various mobile equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, excavators, loaders, septic trucks, Vactors, bobcats, sweepers, forklifts, mowers, bucket trucks, and other machinery, including power tools and non-powered equipment.
  2. Respond to customer complaints, diagnose problems, and resolve routine issues.
  3. Perform primary standby duties for after-hours response according to department policies.
  4. Perform strenuous physical labor and mechanical tasks.
  5. Attend required training courses on safety, diversity, harassment, emergency preparedness, and certifications.
  6. Use electronic work order and timekeeping systems to document work accurately.
Specific Functions (Stormwater Maintenance Technician)
  • Maintain and repair stormwater systems, ponds, catch basins, and manholes.
  • Respond to flooding and hazardous material spills, and locate stormwater utilities.
  • Assist other departments within the transportation section as needed.
Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED and two or more years of relevant maintenance, grounds care, repair, or construction experience, including equipment operation and training, OR a combination of experience, education, and training demonstrating the ability to perform journey level work independently.

Special Requirements
  • Background check, physical, and drug test clearance.
  • Maintain physical and mental fitness for the position.
  • Follow all safety policies and procedures.
  • Valid Washington driver license or obtain within 30 days, with acceptable driving record.
  • Verification of identity and work authorization.
  • Obtain a Class A CDL with air brake and tank endorsements within 24 months.
  • Obtain flagging, first aid/CPR, Water Distribution Manager Level 1, and other certifications as required.
  • Additional certifications such as Hazardous Materials Operations, Confined Space Supervisor, and crane operation within specified timeframes.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of repair techniques, local infrastructure, water system hydraulics, safety regulations.
  • Customer service skills, equipment operation, data entry, and communication skills.
  • Ability to uphold city values, work as part of a team, make quick decisions, perform physical activities, and work in all weather conditions.
